1.) Personality clashes where people misinterpret each other or grate on each others' nerves so much they explode. These types of conflicts can be amended if people watch their actions and attempt to understand the actions of others.
2.) Nasty clashes where one or more participants is being an SOB. These clashes can be resolved, but my guess is they include lots of screaming and yelling.
Type one clashes should be treated gentler than type two, and it is important not to mistake a type one for a type two clash. The small things that will not harm somebody should slide, but if it's something that will turn into a big deal later on or is just dishonest, well then, take ten deep breaths before you confront them.
Yes, I think that is a very good distinction to keep in mind. Although being more assertive is a good thing for people (like myself)whose inclination is not to speak up for themselves, I wish it's drawbacks would also be recognized. It is not always the best thing to voice your disagreement. Sometimes all you're doing is drawing attention to a mistake somebody made, a mistake that person would have backed away from if only you'd given them room.
