patriotism is destroying the world

The love of one's country only leads to the hate of another.Patriotism is just killing the world. The quote above is SO true, and can easily be applied to other people within the country that don't support the same view ( Read more... )

Patriotism is also an excellent way to distract people from real problems and align themselves with you. (i.e. George W. Bush and 9/11)

you know. . .patriotism isn't the end of the world, but "intentional ignorance", in my opinion, is. People willingly not anting to understanding another's way of life, culture, philosophy, etc, is the reason with so much conflict.
Also, a little too much pride in one's beliefs is the main culprit as well (come one, give me one war that wasn't started over a little dispute of opinion). I mean, hey, just because you like your native country doesn't mean you have to hate everyone else. I'm a fairly patriotic person myself, but I love and respect cultures other than my own, almost as though they are my own. Patriotism isn't killing the world; ignorance and misconceptions are.

I doubt that helped >_<

That's really what I meant. But like I said I cant articulate when I'm upset lol.

Ignorance is.... the cancer of humankind, to put it in the best way I can think of. It strikes hard and fast and there's really no cure to it.

Thanks for explaining what I was trying to say! I meant OVER patriotism. I love my country as well, but I would never boycott another or threaten to kill people because they didn't agree with me *nods*

I have never understood patriotism. How can someone love a country? That's way too abstract. Your hometown - yes, but a whole *country*? I just don't get that. In a novel by Pratchett about revolution, the protagonist tells the (well-meaning, but ultimately stupid and uselessly idealistic) rebels to never fight for a cause (or a country) - he says you can fight for your family or your friends, but that's it. Cause you've only got one life, but you can find another five "true causes" round the next street corner. I've always felt that's true.

I think the only way to deal with it is to make fun of it. If I may point a book out to you - "Jingo" by Terry Pratchett. It deals exactly with this topic, and it's hilarious while being very thought-provoking and angering as well. You can find some quotes plus a summary here. And one very fitting quote ( ... )
