[His voice is a bit...odd. It's overly cheerful, quite obviously fake.]

Do you think everything about the Barge is a test? Every last moment? Do you think it purposefully puts the most horrid, rancid, despicable things on board just to screw with you?

Yes, I believe this to be so. My father does whatever he can to make things miserable for us.

I believe so, yes. My wardens tells me that this is not so, but I do not believe him. This is something that he would do to mortals and to punish me for my decisions.

It's hard to know what's truth and what's lies around here, isn't it? Here I'm being fed all this talk about second chances and saving someone, now I'm seeing my old enemy has been on the Barge all along. My Warden knew and didn't tell me.

I didn't expect such a hasty response to Harding's idiocy. Then again, that is likely more to do with the intervening years since I've had to endure your swaggering self-importance.

But where are my manners? Welcome aboard, Inmate Black. I trust you find the Barge preferable to Azkaban?

Swaggering self-importance? At least I wasn't hiding like a coward. But that's all you snakes are, cowards. Cowards hiding behind your masks and your delusional Dark Lord.

Seriously. How do you do it? How you get up in the morning, knowing what you are? Knowing what's been done? It must be wonderful not to have a soul.

I expect I get up in the morning knowing what I am the same way you get up in the morning knowing all your friends are either dead or traitors.

At least I had friends. You've never had anything of the sort.

Bugger off, Snivellus. I'm losing my desire to play by the rules. You aren't the rat but if I squint hard enough, I can pretend you are.

Are you speaking from experience?

Let's say experience and possibility.

If what I've discovered today is a taste of what's to come, you're probably right. I'm sure it's only the beginning.

I have yet to run into anything truly rancid.

Severus Snape. He always stunk of cat urine and unwashed feet whilst we were in school.

While that is revolting, should I hate him simply because you do?

No. You're welcome to like him if you so choose. Everyone has free will, last time I checked.

Although, now that I'm on this rust bucket, I'm starting to wonder.

It's nice to meet you, by the way. I'm glad you haven't come across anything rancid. I was doing well until I found out this toerag was on board. I figure it's part of the test, but now I'm wondering if any of us are meant to pass.

Yeah, I think it is. A misguided, poorly executed test.

Is it possible to pass such a misguided, poorly executed test, or are we well and truly buggered?

That depends on how you feel about cheating.

I can cheat if it makes things go the way I want them to go. The problem is, I don't want to leave and go back to the way things are. I want to leave and change things.
