This is really nice patch. It was always a mystery for me why Dumbledore didn't stand up for Sirius. Your version seems very reasonable and it makes the story sooo sad. Such a tragic person, that Sirius : )

Thank you! And me too! I never understood how Dumbledore could allow Sirius to rot while saving Severus, either. It occurred to me after the scene of Severus' memories in DH that he would condemn him, though, given half a chance.

This was chilling and really brought to mind what it must have been like to hear that cell door close and know he was never going to come out again, even if large part of him accepted the punishment due to his own feelings of guilt. I also loved the swing between his silence and hysterical laughter, no wonder Dumbledore felt he wasn't behaving like an innocent man that night.

Thank you, darling! It occurred to me late one night that if Dumbledore could condemn Snape for his actions, he would have no qualms about using this as a excuse to 'punish' Sirius without exposing Remus. I've always seen DD with a god complex and it was fun to play it out here.
