3. I have a strong head canon idea about this and had written a long passage in a fic about it that I can't find now. The upshot was, that if you take on the animal's form you also take on a bit of it's nature and a wizard always has to be mindful that they don't allow the animal's nature to consume their own human nature/thoughts. I posited that this was the reason all Animagus had to be registered with the Ministry so should some poor bastard get "lost" in his animal form it would be helpful in trying to track them down.

It also meant that Sirius couldn't quite allow himself to let go in his Animagus form since there was always a danger that someone other than the Dementors would come into the cell block and discover him.

Anyway, that's the idea I had about it.

I have often wondered about the requirement for registering an Animagus form, and I happen to like your idea very much. Especially as I happen to agree with your thought that the animal's nature could consume the human nature/thoughts if a wizard wasn't extremely careful.

This may become my new head canon. :)

Thank you. :) It's hard to imagine that a human could be put into the body of an animal and not be overwhelmed by the sheer amount of information an animal takes in through it's senses and have to fight to keep from just giving into it all.

I know that the fact that it's surrounded by water and guarded by dementors is supposedly enough to keep everyone inside, but I like to think that there were wizards and witches involved with the facility. There's some canon evidence for the ability to communicate with dementors, but I think it must be pretty tough.

I agree, since while dementors may be able to keep them in line, I have a hard time picturing the way they're described, as being capable of also feeding, giving water to, and doing other types of practical care that keeping living being alive requires. To me it would only make sense for there to be human guards along with dementors.
