I think that Sirius is a bit like Harry with the blame thing. Both of them blame themselves for someone else's death when it was clearly someone else's fault. Voldemort is to blame for everything but neither can see it properly because they supposedly made the choice which lead to the deaths of those people. I think that if Sirius had the proper time to grieve and move on he may not have blamed himself as much as he did. We can see that his attitude was stunted during his time in Azkaban through his treatment of Snape (compared to Remus'), which leads me to believe that any emotional development was also stunted.

1. I think Sirius was completely in love with James. I think James ultimately loved Lily, but I think he and Sirius might have experimented a little, and there may have been some traces of romantic feelings on his part that were never fully realized. Mostly, I just love their relationship in any form ( ... )

I disagree that if it were romantic it would cloud the relationship. It is possible to love someone, realize they love someone else, and be happy for them being happy and to want to keep the friendship even if you can't be romantically involved with them. It is also possible to have some romantic feelings for one person, but to have stronger feelings for someone else. And it is possible for a friendship to survive, and even be strengthened by both of those things.

Not that it by any means has to be romantic because their friendship is awesome regardless, but I don't agree that it necessarily would hurt the friendship.

I've always imagined that Sirius carried a torch for James but their friendship was so strong and Sirius loved James enough that his relationship with Lily didn't cause him any hard feelings towards James. Only a bit of wistful "if only" going on in his head.

You know, this topic makes me realize that for as long as I've been in HP fandom I've never really formed a concrete opinion on James aside from his relationship to Sirius. He's just such an ill defined character in the books (as far as I'm concerned) that the only characterization I have for him is as Sirius' best friend and Harry's dead father, beyond that...I got nothing.
