You don't have to go home . . .

Jun 24, 2010 21:41

Who: Hatake Kakashi, Temari
When: Thursday night
Where: A random bar in Siren's Port
Summary: Kakashi has decided that the logical place to discuss Temari's mission at AGI is a bar.  Temari does tend to follow orders, so off to a bar they go.
Warnings: Temari will have a beer and might actually tell Kakashi what she thinks of him.
But you can't stay here. )

The bar was busy this time of night, a small hole in the wall filled with patrons trying to make best of happy hour. Half priced drinks meant a busier crowd trying to drink as much cheap booze as they could, which meant no one was really paying attention to who was sitting in the corners ( ... )

It was throwing her off, having the change in setting. The man across from her was a complete stranger when he wasn't giving her orders, and she had no idea what he expected from her now. In a dive bar she would never choose on her own, she felt like a fish out of water even as she slipped off her jacket and dropped into the seat like she had done this a million times. None of the other patrons would notice a pair of adults in the corner chatting over drinks.

When the haggard waitress came by, she ordered whatever beer was on tap, since it seemed to be what most of the people were ordering. She didn't intend to actually drink it, but not ordering some form of alcohol would have everyone staring.

"Interesting choice of a location." She leaned back against the cracked vinyl and studied the man across from her. When was the last time she actually talked to him? There was a brief exchange when Drifter was hurt, but then it was time to work. Before that? Months.

It wasn't easy, settling into the role that had been thrust upon him ( ... )

Temari tipped her head to the side, studying him. If he was trying to build bridges, he had not started off at an easy point. Temari was not the friendliest or most open person to begin with, and her time in Siren's Port had just reinforced her tendencies to work too hard and remain aloof.

"I can think of half a dozen places off the top of my head." But she let it go at that. It wasn't a particularly good idea to harass her senior officer over a choice like this. It was pretty minor, and it wasn't like it was a breach of security.

The waitress returned, and Temari took a sip of the beer that arrived. Not something she had a taste for, but appearances had to be kept.

"Fine. I've been able to make some headway into new sources of information at work, particularly some coworkers that have ridiculous choices for passwords. I still think it's time to move to a new department."

"The department that handles slave trading, hmm?" Kakashi asked as he drew his drink over and took a sip. Or rather, he lifted the glass and the contents somehow decreased without him ever drawing down his mask or bringing it to his lips. Though appearances were only just that -- he'd cast a small genjutsu to maintain the cover of his mask. He wasn't exactly ready to bare his face to Temari just yet.

"That is probably a better department for you... it'll provide us with more intelligence. What have you collected so far?"

It'd been six months since Temari first took upon the mission of infiltrating AGI. Far longer than any of them expected to be be trapped in this place. Deep cover missions like the one Temari had embarked upon took their toll upon the operative; Kakashi knew he had failed in his role as her go-to in helping to keep her sane while dealing with the stress of the mission.

He hoped he wasn't too late in trying now.

Temari shrugged, taking a drink from her beer and trying to not make a face at it. Not a pleasant taste, but she could manage.

"Yes. I have been working to hamper the trial against Sam Merlotte, and while I was making a mess of things, I set it on someone else. I'll use this as a chance to change departments, since I'll be showing my interest in protecting the slave trade."

Six months of working for scuzz balls she would rather see eviscerated than trying to convince her they had an easy way for her to get promoted. That, and constantly watching over her shoulder because she would be facing torture and death if she was caught. She was tired, and it was about to get much worse.

"Most of my work to date has been infrastructure, gaining access to data, figuring out what levers to pull to get things done. It's interesting just how little AGI actually knows about the Core. They're not a prime source of information on how to get home, but it is a solid way to help keep newcomers from becoming prey."

"Hmm, I see. Having you in that position may help us learn more about the slave trade and who is behind it... as well as how we might be able to put a stop to it eventually." It wasn't their business, and this wasn't their home, but the kind of brutality that occurred here couldn't simply be ignored ( ... )

"That's the plan. I'll keep you up to date on how it works out. Hopefully I will be able to make the move quickly." Temari took another, longer drink from her beer. She hated her job, but it was what she had to do. Going deeper into the unsavory side of AGI was not what she wanted, but it had to happen. Someone had to do it.

She idly drew the symbol for Suna in the condensation on her glass, seemingly forgetting for a moment that Kakashi was even there. She wanted to go home. She wanted her family. What she had here barely even qualified as a life.

"Was there anything else you needed? I'm afraid I don't have much in the way of concrete information yet. I should have more soon, once I have a chance to drop the hammer on my co-worker."

"Mmm," Kakashi hummed softly, taking in the information. He reached into the inner pocket of his vest and drew out a small envelope. Inside was Temari's monthly stipend, which he slid across the table to her. "There isn't as much this time because of the earthquake, but I hope it'll help."

The stipend had grown considerably smaller, nearly halved. But with most of the funds going to the earthquake, it was the best that Kakashi could do. He noticed the shape of Suna's insignia against Temari's fingertip. They were all homesick. Longing for what they had left behind. What had been taken away from them -- a place where they truly belonged. But for Sasuke and Itachi, this city seemed a better home than the world that they came from. Back there, they had no home. And Itachi had lost his life.

"Hopefully there will be more next month."

Temari shrugged, taking the envelope because it was less of a scene than to argue with him about it. "I've told you before that it doesn't matter. I make a salary at my job."

And occasionally she would pick up a bounty, more out of boredom than any financial need. She had a loft apartment, bought nothing more than food for herself and her dog. Cooking dinner for Shikamaru's family was her biggest expenditure in months.

She finished off her beer, mostly because it seemed appropriate before leaving. She scooped up her jacket and rummaged in her pocket for some bills to leave for her beer. "I'll let you know when there's an update."
