[It was something, to come and take a creature who was like a god. One of the things that Death had always found sad was when she had to take god, angel, or god like creatures, away. They all had their time, just like everyone else did, but they were also the closest to what she was.

Even her siblings had an expiration date, something she rarely thought about. She smiled at the new arrival, though, holding up her hand in greeting.]

That was some show you put on.

[ He expects her, a familiar presence he has encountered on more than one occasion. To say he anticipated his own demise would probably be overstating it -- it was never his desire to die, not because he places such a high value on himself, but rather out of concern for those left behind. Despite that, he always knew, from the very moment the idea of escape was proposed to him, that the possibility was there.

Padding silently forward, he presses his muzzle lightly against her hand. They are old friends, and he feels no animosity or discontentment over being taken. His only concern now is for the living -- the ones he can no longer reach. ]

There was no other way.

I know. You did a good job, once again.

[She smiles, getting down on her knees to wrap her arms around him in a hug, scratching behind his ears for a second.]

You were always thinking of others.

[ "Were". It's odd to think of himself in the past tense. It's the way of things, of course, and he's been down this road before. Even so, it doesn't feel like a true end.

He's quiet for a long moment, taking what solace he can in her embrace. Then, finally- ]

I may or may not return.

[ He draws back gently. ]

Would you speak on my behalf?
