When Himawari had first arrived she was positive that there wasn't a job that she could do in the city that wouldn't put people in danger. She looked over her options and talked to others but in the end she was positive she would hurt someone, anyone who might shop there. That was until she met her first employer who had this strange ability to put curses on other people. He could see a curse on anyone and told her what she suffered from. They talked; he hired her that day ( ... )

There sighs, lamentations and loud wailings resounded through the starless air, so that at first it made me weep; strange tongues, horrible language, words of pain, tones of anger, voices loud and hoarse, and with these the sound of hands, made a tumult which is whirling through that air forever dark, and sand eddies in a whirlwind...

The gold leaflet made the page glimmer and he lost himself in the passage...Bending his head down as he recreated the scene within his mind: The anguished souls who were without Death, denied entry to both Heaven and Hell for they'd lived without infamy or praise.

Virgil explaining to Dane that these cries emanate from the souls of those who did not commit to either good or evil but who lived their lives without making conscious moral choices; therefore, both Heaven and Hell have denied them entry.

Observing her from the strategic spot between aisles could've proved to be tricky business if she was more observant herself, though it was apparent her only interest today was books...Not that he could blame her. This particular shop was stocked with quite the variety, and there would be very little reason for her to suspect there might be someone watching her in a bookshop.

As a book falls from hand to shelf Lecter makes a point to linger until the petite Himawari is just in front of him before he sidles around, coming to stand at the end of the shelving to slide his fingers over just such a book she was searching for. It was

"The Grimms' Fairytales", he said without looking over at her, his voice well-oiled compared to its usual metallic rasp.

"It's also called Children's and Household Tales by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm."

Folklore. A smile came to his lips as he pulled forth a copy that was both in German and English, with illustrations.
