Summary: Merlin keeps buddying up with magical creatures! This isn't out of the ordinary, but man is it annoying. And irresponsible. But that won't stop him from sharing tales of his adventures with Arthur, probably to cheer him up, which is probably going to backfire. So just the usual, ( Read more... )

Meeting two dragons and a mermaid within the span of a month-- a month, it was as if he was back in Camelot again. Only this was, in some ways, better, because there every mystical creature they encountered wanted to either kill Arthur or steal the throne or both, whereas here everyone seemed to simply want to live their life.

It was wonderful. Aside from Kilgharrah, Merlin had never had a chance to speak at length with a mystical creature before. The fact that he could, that he was discovered new ones, ones with their own legends and histories and cultures, was fascinating and he couldn't get enough. It was why he had been out in the Darkness for the past few nights, searching for new ones, attempting to talk to the Darkness monsters to see if he could get anything out of them.

It was exciting work, yes, but it also had the consequence of taking him away from Arthur. True, he had less chores than he normally did, but he wasn't even doing the few he did have. Still, nothing out of the ordinary there; Arthur had to be used to things ( ... )

He looked away from the kitchen, back down at the book open in front of him. No matter how long he'd known of Merlin's magic, seeing it performed so casually was still downright unnerving. There were days where he nearly said just that--but he'd said that he would put up with Merlin's magic, and so he would.

Besides, the suggestion of anything else than tolerance would set Merlin to moping, and that was more annoying than anything else.

He turned the page in his book. "What were you doing, that kept you so long?"

"Hm?" he said vaguely, glancing back. "Oh, I wanted to see if there were any other creatures-- did I tell you I met a mermaid?-- but I wanted to see if there were any others like that out there." He grinned at Arthur a bit uncertainly-- talking of magic was still an uncertain thing-- before turning back to their dinner once again.

"There's several, you see," he told the onions. "Mermaids and dragons and all sorts of things-- it's fascinating, they're all from different worlds but they all share the same sorts of things, traits and personalities and things like that."

While Merlin was busy chattering to the onions, Arthur was scowling down at his book. Dragons. Never mind that Merlin was on apparently friendly terms with the dragon that had attacked Camelot--which, if they were so very friendly, why was it that it had attacked Camelot in the first place, why hadn't Merlin persuaded it to do otherwise--dragons were still fearsome creatures of magic. He might have accepted Merlin's magic, but that didn't mean that he was willing to trust all magic--and certainly not the magic of some wild, uncontrollable creature.

The dragons here--dragon, singular, really; Arthur had only met the one--would be no different. The dragon that he had encountered in the darkness had been a vile thing, just as ready to commit violence as any of its kind. But of course, Merlin--stupid, hapless Merlin--would go sporting off into the Darkness to look for them and any others like them. Of course he would find it all fascinating.

Magic or no, Arthur really had an idiot for a servant ( ... )
