Hitsugaya didn't see why all of this was necessary. Why the hell did this even matter so much? Frankly, he wasn't sure why he had even agreed to come out here at all.

And yet he followed Kuchiki into the store. "What precisely is the point of all this? I know how to present myself."

He knew how to get under people's skin, too. Why he evidently needed to do it Kuchiki's way was beyond him. But damned if he was staying quiet about it.

"Indeed you do." Byakuya agreed with an almost amicable air. "However, in this arena, being a taichou is not enough." Byakuya barely flicked his eyes at the shopgirl, before she went looking for a manager. "The girl will not understand that. Being a noblewoman, she is well versed in certain behaviors." He was practically babbling. "This, she will understand."

And it would make humiliating her all the sweeter.

The manager came out. "Mr. Kuchiki." He'd been here before, and been disappointed, but come out with a few acceptable things. "How can I help you and... your son?"

That drew his attention and he merely ticked up an eyebrow at her presumption.

"I don't care what that . . ." No, no. He had to take that down a notch. "... what that witch understands. I'm not catering to her."

Damn nobles and their petty political games. He hated politics, and only engaged in them when strictly necessary. This was not one of those times.

Hitsugaya forgot about these concerns for a moment, though, when the shop assistant addressed him as Kuchiki's son. Just . . . What the hell? He quietly ground his teeth. No. This was not acceptable.

His voice was even, but very tight when he finally spoke to her. It was a testament to his self-control that that he didn't outright snap out his words. "I'm not his son."

"Oh?" The manager actually kept a polite look on her face. She glanced at Kuchiki, far more used to dealing with him.

"A colleague." He was actually being sincere. During his time here, he had come to respect the Tenth's taichou more than he ever had at home. Of course, that didn't mean he'd still believe that when they returned. "He has need of clothing, for a... function." Byakuya settled himself into a chair, trying so hard not to smirk. "Nothing formal, but not overtly casual, either. Comfortable, but appropriate for more delicate company."

"Of course, Mr. Kuchiki." Then she scuttled away.

He just ticked up an eyebrow at Hitsugaya and waited.
