Harry always tried to keep in good shape, not because he was all that vain about his looks or because at nearly seven feet tall it was hard enough to find clothes as it was. No, he kept in shape for one reason and one reason only, so that scary monsters trying to eat him could not catch him.
Which is precisely why he was running right now. His client had hired him to find a very valuable family heirloom and Harry had been hot on the trail of it when the sirens went off. He had actually been able to snatch the necklace just before one of the Sharp Fisted Apes showed up and decided that it wanted the necklace. Or it just wanted to kill Harry. It was hard to tell which but either way, Harry was running for all he was worth, long strides just barely keeping him ahead of the creature.
Rounding a corner, Harry saw someone running perpendicular to him along another street, someone familiar that almost made him stop in his tracks.
Elaine glanced sharply around to face him at the sound of her name, her eyes wide, and her hair whipping behind her. "Harry?" She almost slowed down, but she saw the thing hot on his heels and merely changed directions, shaking the chain-whip free of her belt as she ran. "What the hell?!"
He didn't even have time to process the fact that Elaine was here and what that meant. He was pretty sure it meant something, probably complicated in ways that he would rather not thing about, but right now he was dealing with the complications of not getting killed.
He generally tried to avoid killing the Darkness monsters when possible. It wasn't their fault they were Darkness monsters and not only that, but he had learned the hard way some of them could hold a grudge. If it came to someone else being endanger, someone he cared about and was protective toward, it was a whole different story.
"Go for the arms!" he shouted to her. Spinning around the face the creature, he activated his shield bracelet, bracing himself for the oncoming impact.
Elaine lashed out, bracing her feet and drawing energy from the earth to stabilize her balance as the whip coiled around one of the creature's wrists. She activated the taser-like charge, and blue lightning crackled down the length of chain as well, as she attempted to jerk it off balance.
Things were always complicated whenever she and Harry ran into each other these days, but at least they had a common threat to break the ice. Or at least temporarily distract them from the awkwardness of the reunion.
