Okay, so this was not the normal course of things.
Matt didn't really consider himself a tough guy - that sort of thing was dangerous in a world ruled by a serial killer who didn't like anyone that veered away from 'hardworking citizen,' after all, no matter whose side you were on. So whatever his opinion of himself - neither tough guy nor soft touch, thank you very much - he didn't go around acting the part. Still, he knew he was pretty emotionally unflappable on a general basis, and he knew how to keep himself afloat despite weird circumstances. It wasn't difficult to scoff and take the mostly logical route, unless video games were concerned.
So, how he'd ended up with a kitten to feed when he could barely feed himself, he didn't know. A kitten he wasn't even really sure how to take care of beyond 'I have to buy this thing a litter box so it doesn't crap on the floor anymore.' And something about kibble when it was a year old

He had... a kitten in his pocket? She would. not. coo. No. She'd totally play it cool. Jubilee knew enough about herself that she would never, ever get a pet. Because she'd eventually flake, or get captured, or something, and it'd starve to death. She was still traumatised from the fish incident when she'd been a kid.
She couldn't help the smile that flittered over her face though. "A kitten?" She asked, unable to stop the amusement, though. She bit her lip. He'd brought a kitten to the mall.
The adorableness was almost enough to make her coo. But no. She was totally being mature.
"Can I see?" She asked hopefully. Okay, maybe the maturity would come later? Geez. One little kitten and she totally loses it....
Matt might not be the most perceptive guy around, not when it came to the emotional stuff, or, really, anything girls did...but even he couldn't miss the instant smile and connect 'cute kitten' with 'cooing girl.' He licked his lips nervously as she looked sort of amused and bit her lip, and generally looked like she was trying not to be a total dork about it.
That was an expression he could recognize in anyone, since he wore it so damn often on his own face

Jubilee's fingers reached out and gently brushed over the kitten's ears carefully. It really was a cute little thing. "It's cute." She said, smiling finally. "What's it's name?" Jubilee asked.
Great, now she was more interested in a cat than in food. That was okay, it was a cute kitten. It made her wish she could get one, but again, fish incident.
"Oh, and uhh..." Jubilee looked up, sheepishly, finally meeting his eyes. "I'm Nats." She offered her hand to shake.
"Ya here for lunch?" Jubilee asked. Mainly because her stomach needed greasy cheesy food and fast.
