Just past that door was an increasingly frustrated Quincy trying to wrestle ivy out of a vacuum cleaner.

The past few days had been hell on his cleaning habits. Dandelions, roses, daffodils and a blueberry bush, among other sorted arrangements, had made it impossible to keep the apartment tidy. As he cleaned up and threw out one plant, another would sprout behind him. Add to that Keigo's oh-so-helpful laser fire from his finger, and Uryuu couldn't help but dread what his home would look like in a month's time. He'd be lucky if it was still standing.

There! He half fell-back, a clutch of captured ivy in his hand. He heard the knock as he was rolling the vacuum back into the closet, and turned with a suspicious look. This was the other massive problem from this disaster; he couldn't sense people. What would he do if it was Luppi on the other side of that door? Or Szayel?

Not that I can do anything about Szayel, he thought irritably. Not since that atrocious scientist had implanted whatever device let him toggle the Quincy's ( ... )

Ishida's frustration came through clearly. Edgeworth could hear from his mind precisely how much he was struggling with this new ability. That, however, was not what interested him the most - rather, it was that bit about Syazel. What was that about unconsciousness? He did not altogether understand what he meant by -

Stop it, Edgeworth. He focused on the door, the appearance of the doorknob, and forced himself to stop prying into Ishida's mind. Stop. And, likewise, when the door swung open, he forced himself to focus hard on Ishida's feet and nothing else.

"Indeed." He nodded, still not meeting the young man's eyes. "I've come to speak with you, but I must stress to you that I have been given the power to read minds. If you do not wish to meet with me, that is perfectly acceptable; merely say as much, and I shall go."

...The Core has made him telepathic. He knows what I'm thinking.

It would seem in the next moment like a thick curtain had fallen. It wasn't silence (no matter the Quincy's discipline, something like that would be beyond him without supernatural help), but it was a definite muffling. Uryuu's thoughts were quiet, deliberate, and - for the moment - completely focused on the information in front of him. A steady mantra of calm, calm, calm flowed through his mind.

As for his demeanor, it had switched over easily into determined focus and scholarly, strategic detachment. He shook his head and stepped aside to invite Edgeworth in. "No, it's fine. I'll maintain my thoughts. Please, sit down while I clean up the last of this mess."

He turned away to throw the rest of the plant debris into his garbage bag and return his vacuum to the hallway closet. Patches of clover filled in the indents his footsteps left on the carpet.

"What's brought you by, Edgeworth-san?"

And in an instant - in a remarkable instant - Ishida had become a center of calm. Even just listening - "listening" - to him made the tension drain from Edgeworth's shoulders. The young man's mind was remarkable, truly: he disciplined without being rigid, intelligent without having a busy mind, thoughtful, quiet, and calm - all of which Edgeworth had already suspected from the way he comported himself, but here was proof positive. Truly, Ishida was an astonishingly competent person, particularly given his age.

Given his background, as well. Edgeworth had encountered his father, and he'd found a great deal lacking in the doctor's manner. He'd...

Don't let your mind wander, Miles. Too easily distracted, these days.

"I'm coming to speak with you about Nara." He watched the rapid growth of the clover that trailed Ishida's steps. "The situation is...dire."
