Juliet, the dice was loaded from the start, and I bet, and you exploded in my heart. )
For all that his presence was practically invisible to most in Siren's Port, news of Yaha's capture and the circumstances involved hadn't been long in reaching his ears. Black Mask was on the run now, too, and though they did have a favorable rapport, it was the kind of mess he would sooner leave to the other man than help him clean it up.
And then there was Light, his sometime target, now employer -- everything seemed to be coming apart at once. Why else would he call the man he at one point threatened to turn in?
Waiting patiently, keep a weather eye on the lookout for anything suspicious, Slade mostly kept out of sight. He'd grown less fond of day job over the years, preferring to work in uniform, but this was not one of those times. Instead, he wore a disguise, keeping it casual so as not to draw attention. "He's Batman's more than mine." Or anyone else's for that matter.

A very simplistic answer to a very complex issue, but delving much deeper into Batman and Joker's bizarre 'relationship' wasn't really something he cared enough to do. 'Opposites attract' was really the simplest way to put it.

"It's only fair to let you ask me questions too. You're only here because you're curious; let's face it. It's not like you really need the money." They were finally back at the campus, and Light paused at the double doors, turning to face the other man deliberately. "So ask already."

"You haven't asked about me."
Likewise, Slade wouldn't ask about Light. Granted, there were plenty of things he could learn for himself just by watching the network; in all honestly, though, he wasn't overly curious about the answers. It was an interesting way to spend his time, more so than the bounties he usually brought in, so that in itself was a fair trade.

"I could. I don't know anything about you."
But he didn't say he would, either. It was...unimportant. Not part of their arrangement. He opened the door. "I'll fetch your money. Do you want to come up with me or wait here?"

He trusted Light to deliver that which he was owed. Apart from that, he had no business in Light's living space; they understood each other well enough.

"You said you wouldn't take a job against me. That still stands, right?"
He had to be sure.

"It does."
And he meant it.

There was no telling when he'd hear from Light again, but undoubtedly, it would be interesting.
