Vanitas would be a no-good, rotten horrible liar if he said he wasn't looking forward to this-- though he's plenty capable of being so anyway. His pride was never quite up to snuff after Ventus Junior's comment about being nothing but Baldy's little lackey, and even though it was Baldy's suggestion--order-- that he... fetch the Ventus lookalike for further analysis, Vanitas saw it as an opportunity to knock the kid down a few pegs and boost his own ego.

Quite literally. Though one might argue otherwise if he was looking to regain his pride, Vanitas never saw a reason to give Ventus Junior a chance to fight back. That's why, at some point in following him home, he'd opened a portal up to a nearby rooftop and stood by silently, watching Roxas down below.

Watching, and waiting.

Roxas walked on the sidewalk as he headed back to the apartment. It was out of habit, mostly; once the evening sirens rang out, no one was crazy enough to drive around, even if the darkness decay didn't affect their cars. He could've walked down the middle of the street if he wanted. That might make a more dramatic picture, but he didn't care about that. He just wanted to go home.

He couldn't forget the tone of Ahiru's voice when she'd talked him the other day. They weren't close friends, but he knew her enough to recognize the difference in her tone; it was quieter, calmer...more heartless. Did that make her a Nobody too? Or still herself, yet diminished?

Whatever had been done to her, it was wrong. It shouldn't have happened and it couldn't be allowed to go on. A frontal assault on Xehanort's home was unlikely to work, though-or was it? It seemed too simple. The internal debate occupied him as he walked, distracting him as his feet found the route home automatically.

Boots planted firm along the edge of the rooftop as Vanitas drew himself up to a straightened stance and watched his target below march along slowly. He never paid more than a few seconds' attention in math class lately, but he calculated that he had about five seconds before he needed to jump, and another three seconds to fall and strike Ventus Junior down.

At three, Void Gear burst into his hand in a light that was too far up for Roxas to notice; gravel scraped beneath his boots and his body slit through the frigid air in his descent.

At two, he lifted the Keyblade in both hands and selected his primary target to aim for: the back of Roxas' head.

At one, it'd be too late for Roxas to react.

It wasn't a premonition or a sixth sense or anything special that pulled Roxas out of his reverie. He had power, but he didn't have that kind of power. He wasn't even sure himself what caught his attention, whether it was a sound or a stirring in the air caused by a rapidly-plummeting boy. It didn't matter. At the last second he looked up, and for an instant, wide eyes took in the crooked sight of Vanitas descending.

Less than a second later, there was a crack as the dark Keyblade connected with his skull. But Roxas barely felt it; he sank into an immediate darkness as unconsciousness took him and his body dropped to the pavement.
