With the attack in full retreat, it was time for Samus to be following suite. The power had gone out with no warning at all, and she didn't like the sensation of dread that was starting to build in her chest. Something about the Darkness was different tonight, something sinister.

The cops and voids were all tucked into the Core area so it was time to make her withdrawal, moving through the dugouts towards...hey was that...Snake?

Drawing the Paralyzer she sighted along it's length, trying to dispel the dizziness Liquid's assault had left her with. Once she had a solid target, she let fly with a bolt of blue plasma.

"If it's an AI then it has disturbingly life-like animisms." Like calling her Lady again. "And memories."

She turned as Snake worked the door, covering him with the Paralyzer leveled out into the darkness. Worse came to worse, she'd call on the Varia suit.

That gets a contemplative noise in answer. Really shouldn't be surprised by anything anymore. "Speaking from experience, huh?" he asked as he worked. "You sound pretty convinced ( ... )

"Well...I served with Adam Malcovich when he was alive, and once I encountered him inside a the computer for my gunship...well...it wasn't at all hard to draw the two parallels."

Samus followed Snake inside obediently, letting her eyes adjust to the sudden light thrown from his lighter compared to the barely starlit night outside. She smiled down at her new black-and-white friend, leaning down to rub his head and scratch behind his ears.

"You didn't seem like the animal type to me."

It wasn't that he doubted her judgment really; but he'd rather it wasn't true, for her commander's sake. And he's not quick to bring up what had happened to Fox at all. But they hadn't known GW was an AI either, not until Emma's virus caused it to malfunction. He sunk back into a silence until she spoke again, working up a plan of action. Can't track down Liquid or his friends like this. Not until morning, at the very least. For now, find some light, patch themselves up, figure out what happened at the field. Maybe even get some sleep.

"...Hm?" He looked over at her for the first time since they'd crossed the threshold. Type? Never really thought about it. Maybe someone would sooner expect a snake. But he'd always been fond of dogs. Smart, loyal to a fault. And if one happens to bite the hand that feeds, it's never out of hate. Strong pack mentality, too. Someone with a little more insight might have said Snake had subconsciously surrounded himself with a couple dozen of them to try to compensate for missing ( ... )

"That sounds nice." Samus had never had dogs or pets herself, never had any room for them or time in her life to take care of someone other than herself. The closest thing had been the Metroid Hatchling she'd encountered, and the indigenous like from SR-388 that she'd rescued from the Federation Facility. Hopefully they were alright now, without her there.

Rubbing the dog's head she padded along after Snake, following him into the kitchen. "It sounds like you had a good time doing it. What made you stop? Or was that when the Core pulled you?"

"...no. It was before that." Snake said, running a hand along the wall to steady himself as he walked. "I was pulled out of retirement four years ago during Liquid's little insurrection." Although truthfully, it was less 'pulled out of retirement' and more 'abducted, blackmailed, and used.' He took a moment to draw out several long, tapered candles from a disused cabinet and move them to the kitchen table to light them. Not very much, but better than nothing. Leftover from Thanksgiving dinner, of all things, complete with candlesticks. Ocelot always did know how to put on a good show.

"That's where I met Otacon." He explained, flicking his lighter closed. And Meryl, too; which wasn't the easiest of topics but he kept coming back to her in his mind because Samus did remind him of her quite a bit, sometimes. "A couple months later he contacted me about working together on a more regular basis." Snake's home was a bit too remote to commute ( ... )

"You went after WMD's? That's pretty ballsy, most places won't give something like that up even remotely easily. I never pictured Hal being involved in that kind of thing really, seemed like he was more the 'stuck-in-a-lab type'."

Padding into the kitchen, dog at her heels, Samus waited for her eyes to adjust before indicating a chair. "Sit down, let's take a look at your leg and see what we can do about it."

Snake hummed an affirmative. Otacon kept off the battlefield, when they could help it, but he was tougher than people gave him credit for. How and why Otacon got involved wasn't really his story to tell, though.

"Ever since the specs got out, everyone with the funding has their own version of Metal Gear." He said. "Otacon handles support. I do all the grunt work." They had a couple benefactors, and Nastasha and Mei Ling helped out when they could. But for the most part Philanthropy was essentially a two-man job.

He eased himself down into the chair obediently, untying the bloodstained field dressing and tearing the leg of his pants away from the wound to get a look at it. Looked pretty messy in the low light, and now that they were safe and the adrenaline had mostly faded from his system he was really starting to feel it. But he was lucky, at least, in that the bullet seemed to have passed right through.

"Metal Gear...that's the robot right? The walking tank?" Otacon had mentioned it to her once, although the specifics were a little fuzzy to be honest.

Kneeling at his feet, Samus leaned in to inspect the wound and shook her head slowly. "Messy. Through and through it looks like though, so there's that at least."

Straightening up she went to the sink for a wet washcloth. "Don't go anywhere" she quipped over one shoulder.

Slightly surprised that she recognized it, since it seemed to be exclusive to his particular homeworld, Snake raised his head and studied her for a while before nodding once. Otacon must have mentioned it.

"Bipedal tank and mobile nuclear platform." He clarified. Which was putting it simply. Every model was different, but it didn't take much imagination to see how dangerous it was for someone to be able to launch a nuke from just about anywhere in the world.

He watched her cross the room and exhaled sharply in what might have been a dry laugh, if he wasn't busy bleeding all over the kitchen. She didn't have to worry about that, at least. Not going anywhere for a while if he can help it.

"Nowhere else to be." He said. Liquid and Kadaj could wait. He knew how to pick his battles.

"The Federation is always so proud to tout that Humanity grew out of the 'Nuclear weapons' stage...must be nice to gloat when no one knows about your weaponizing biological weapons 'phase'."

Wetting a cloth and wringing it out she padded back over, scratching the dog on the head on the way by. "I shouldn't have to tell you this is going to hurt but...this is going to hurt. Don't suppose you have a first aid kit lying around?"

"Biological weapons, huh?" Snake echoed, habitually. Always something worse. Of course he knew it, deep down, but it was never great to hear. Figured the next step after nukes would be bioweapons. Saw that with FOXDIE, hadn't they? He grimaced a bit at the assessment of the damage, but shook his head.

"I wasn't kidding when I said I've had worse. Don't worry about it."

Hell, it was a luxury to have anyone around to help him out at all. He seemed about to continue, but cut himself off and pointed her in the direction of what first aid they had in the house instead. It wasn't much of an uncommon occurrence for one or the other of them to need a patch job. Not much in the way of painkillers, though. Good thing he had a high threshold for it.

He raised a somewhat grimy hand to rub at his eyes as he waited for her to come back. By the time she did, he seemed to have sorted out what he meant to say in the first place.

"...thanks. Samus."

"Ah...don't mention it, you'd do the same for me." He'd caught her by surprise with the thanks and she coloured a little, thankful for the dark.

Crouching back down on her knees she began the thorough process of disinfecting and binding the wound, thankful there wasn't a whole bullet to be removing. As it was, looking for fragments would be a pain in the ass.

"I should get you a suit like mine."

Imagining the Varia suit, Snake paled a bit and gripped the arm of his chair a little harder. Hard to tell if it was from the words or the pain. In either case, he finds somewhere distant to focus his gaze in the darkness.

"...no, thanks." He said, carefully level. Not that he didn't appreciate the concern and all. But it wasn't really his kind of weapon. Worked for Samus and Olga well enough, but the price paid for that kind of technology in his own world was a little too high. And hit far too close to some of his nightmares.

"It's a pipe dream anyway," She quipped back, too intent on her work to notice the paling of his skin. "As far as I know it's one of a kind, only the Chozo could make another one."

Not that people hadn't tried, over the years, to mimic the Varia suit, but that's all they were; mimics. Nothing even came close to the advanced suite of weapons and defenses it boasted.
