Godot had stopped trying to reason with himself as to why he was bothering to go drinking with Phoenix Wright. Again. Particularly when there wouldn't be any drinking on his part. Yumeno would have his head if he found out Godot was drinking alcohol again. Even if Godot was starting to suspect it wouldn't have any effect on him whatsoever ( ... )

Considering that Godot had been one of the few people to support him when he'd taken the Joker as his client, it was sort of ironic that he would have agreed to the drink solely for the point of having one after that awful trial. The fact that it wasn't just for that reason was its saving grace, and the fact that Godot actually came was reassurance that he was actually doing the right thing...for one time in his life at least.

No, he shouldn't be so hard on himself. He'd done a lot in the past, changed lives for the better--for people like Adrian Andrews, back at that awful trial, for Maggey, and the Skye sisters, for Maya and Edgeworth and yes, even Larry.

Squaring his shoulders, Phoenix offered his friendliest smile, and a rather too robotic wave, but then it was hard to have square shoulders and not wave anything but stiffly.

"You're early."

Godot shot back one of his usual cryptic smiles, grabbing the menu at the center of the table and turning it over to look at it. Parts of it were blank, apparently, in an attempt to be stylish. Fortunately, the coffee section was intact. Depressingly short on variety, but intact.

"It's better to be fashionably early than apologetically late," he recited. "How's business, Wright?"

"Business?" He shook his head. Honestly he hadn't thought about work much in the past few days, it had been at the back of his mind the whole time. Quietly Phoenix picked up his drink and took a sip, then looked at the clock--even though he knew the time already.

"I still win cases, if that's what you mean. Turns out I haven't lost my touch after all."

Hah, irony. He couldn't help the bitter taste in his mouth, and it had nothing to do with the cranberry juice and vodka.

"How's being a prosecutor turning out for you?"

"Still pulling out that rookie luck, are you, Wright?" It could have been demeaning, but Godot's voice sounded oddly amiable for... well, for being him.

He received his black roast shortly, this time without the whiskey. Taking a long sip, he paused before he answered Phoenix.

"Same as always," he replied. "It takes getting used to, sitting on the other side of the courtroom. Makes a man wonder if it can be done at all."
