Maya was calmer, now. She's screamed and she'd cried at him yesterday - how could she do anything else? She'd confronted Edgeworth - cried on Re-l, even went to Godot. And Yaha...

She was calmer. There was a bitter sensation in her stomach about this - all of this - Edgeworth's deal - Phoenix's stupidity - the fact that she was too useless to do anything, as usual. She couldn't even calm herself without running to Re-l or Godot. But Re-l had given her advice - and she trusted Re-l - even if she felt like a pathetic, useless child for having to need to be advised to begin with.

Stay with Phoenix.

She's been planning to do that already - but hearing it helped give her clarity. They would have to save Edgeworth and Phoenix both, somehow - and do something about Yaha while they were at it. And as upset as she was with Phoenix right now (and she'd never been more upset), he needed her ( ... )

Phoenix had fortunately finished pouring his hot milk just as Maya came in, putting the saucepan aside--fortunate, otherwise he might have dropped it on his foot. She looked tired and exhausted, like he'd only seen her that day back at the Kurain family house, after the murder in the channeling hall.

Quietly Phoenix moved his chair around to face the table again, trying to keep out of her way, not speaking a word to draw any of that previous anger back on himself. She probably despised him right now... He wouldn't blame her.

Still, he was stuck with hot milk rather than hot chocolate so long as he didn't get up to get the cocoa powder... Actually maybe hot milk was fine. Gripping the cup with both hands, Phoenix bowed his head closer to the steaming milk and tried to disappear.

She was tired and exhausted - and small. But she really couldn't afford to be the terrified little girl she felt like (was) right now - and she couldn't let things stand as they were.

"Phoenix."

She had no idea what to even say to him - but this was a start. She stood, looked at him. There wasn't any anger, not anymore - it was more like resignation, her voice devoid of any cheer at all. But it was better than nothing.

The sound of his name was sort of jarring, breaking the horrible silence. Phoenix? Phoenix, not Nick. People only ever used his whole first name when he was in trouble--or before 'Wright', and then they hit him with something. Yaha used it. Frowning into his hot milk, Phoenix braced himself, then turned to look up at her, a manly determination not to cry settled like a stone weight in his chest.

"You're welcome to...sit with me if you can't sleep, Maya. If you want to, I mean."

There was a brief pause as she tried to figure out what to say. She saw that look - something in her chest twisted at the sight of it - but she didn't flinch away.

"Okay," she said quietly, in the end, crossing over to him. "Don't drink the milk just like that. Get the cocoa powder, or honey, or something."

No Nick. Not now, she couldn't- She just, couldn't.
