"Ah, sorry!" Maya said hastily, jolting to her feet and trying to diffuse the situation. (She did honestly feel guilty, because this was Godot's apartment. She should have asked.) But still - she was afraid Godot would have refused if she'd asked, (or he'd avoid it) and they needed to have this conversation. It was only a matter of time before Grimmjow caught up to her, and before that... both of them needed to know the truth. The whole truth.

"It's my fault. I brought him here. I-I know it's sudden, but I wanted us to have that talk I mentioned. Sorry, Mr. Godot, I should have asked you before letting him in. Please d-don't be mad at him, he didn't do anything. I'm the one you should be mad at."

She had asked him, right? Maya had asked Godot whether or not they could be here? Yes? Because if she hadn't...

Godot's expression made the truth clear.

"You didn't ask, did you?"

The softest whisper, and then Phoenix tried to sink deeper into the sofa, dropping his head just a little.

"She's right. We need to talk about this, but you shouldn't be angry with Maya at all. I'm still the one who agreed to do it."

Well, he wasn't about to take it out on Maya. In fact, Godot was doing a rather good job of seeming rather even-tempered about all this. Seemingly ignoring Phoenix and Maya, he made his way into the kitchenette and dropped off all his bags, careful to shove the paper bag from the pharmacy off where Phoenix couldn't see it.

Right on schedule, one of his four coffee machines (in the kitchen, anyway) had started to brew. He stood there and waited for it to finish, then poured himself a cup of coffee. Then he drank it all in one gulp. Then he poured himself a second cup and stepped out into the living room, leaning against the doorframe. He felt rather trapped in all of this.

"So what's this all about?"

"Nick, cut it out. It's my fault." She sounded almost a little exasperated. As Godot left the room, Maya leaned in to whisper as quietly as she could:

"I'll explain later."

When Godot returned, she took to fidgeting with her hands. She'd told him before (or had he forgotten?).

"Um, remember when I said I wanted to talk about the Hazakura case, with both of you there? Nick already heard a lot of it from Franziska, but... I need to tell him everything. And there's some parts I haven't told you, so... I wanted both of you to be here when I explained everything."

She really didn't want to do this. But at this point, she had no choice, and was quickly running out of time to stall.

Phoenix frowned at the whisper, trying to sit less awkwardly on the couch but only managing to look constipated instead. This wasn't going well, and now Godot was armed. No, it was usually worse when the man looked calm.

Yes, he knew what this was about, but that didn't make it any easier. He sat up just a little straighter as Maya began to talk.

"You'd better start from the beginning," he urged, softly, trying to swallow back the dread. Whatever it was she hadn't told him...
