There were a lot of things wrong about all of this. Established situation aside, of course.

For one thing, it was probably not the best idea to agree to meet up with a relative stranger for combat practice; he looked more than seasoned in that respect, if the video feed was anything to go by. If he happened to have intentions other than a night of training, it'd be a bit difficult for Kei to handle herself. It's not like she could expect backup from the Arcadia's cannons.

Second, the when and where. She'd had her encounter with the horrific rope-faced monsters on her first excursion. If Naruto hadn't been there, then...well. It would've been a short little adventure, in any case ( ... )

At the sound of the decidedly female and familiar voice; Jack tore his gaze from the setting sun and literally perked up. Then he turned his head towards its source, and looked at her --

-- and looked quite long, and intensely, as she approached him, until he finally managed to redirect his gaze at the ground. She looked a lot better than on the video feed, he realized; and if he didn't know that it would be rude (or that Kei was paying attention to him right now) to stare at a person like that, well -- he would've loved to look at her some more. It wasn't like appearances were important to him in the long run, but he had a sense for aesthetics and appreciated beautiful things -- and people. Some kind of compensation for the ugly things he did, and himself ( ... )

The gawking-then-looking-away thing must've been a regular thing around this time period, Kei figured. It didn't phase her much, save for flashing a bit of a smirk his way. Seasoned, indeed; up close and in person, she could acknowledge more than a few signs of battle experience. Not just the loads of equipment, either--things like that don't make the man.

"Standard issue," she replied lightly, shifting her weight to one leg. "You'll see it in action soon enough. You did say hurry, after all, yes?" She tilted her head and gave him a look. By your leave, then?

Well, so much for that -- and he'd been really curious about that gun, too; if she really was from space there was no way it was standard issue -- at least not what he would consider standard issue. And if he could talk about anything for hours, it were guns. No contest.

Like this, Jack blinked once, gave a small grunt, and gestured her to sit behind him. He frowned to himself when he realized that there was, in fact, no sidecar this time, and he hadn't even thought about such things as helmets. Ah, well. If it were an issue for her, she would've mentioned it by now, he figured. Or hoped. As good as he was at reading people, sometimes he was so oblivious it should be physically painful.

"I'll take care of the driving, then. I count on you to do most of the shooting, should it become necessary."

Talk about role-reversal.

Permission granted. Kei stepped over and hopped onto the bike behind him. She was just a little too excited for that, maybe; she'd spent her time here just watching those ancient vehicles speed by. Sure, she could've taken a cab whenever she liked, but it wasn't much different than enclosed transports she'd known before. This was different. Ridiculous, reckless, open-air transport.

She couldn't wait.

"Aye, sir!" That was an impulse reply. She situated herself, considering before settling one hand on his shoulder for some sense of balance, while the other could rest her her hip for a quick draw.

"Ready when you are."

Truth be told, neither could he. Life as a former career soldier and now mercenary shunned by his own country kinda made you accustomed to living a life on the edge; and to stop caring about your own safety so much even in situations where you could. That didn't mean that he wouldn't keep an eye on Kei, though -- more than on himself, however, and he only got that one eye ( ... )

She'd flown farther and faster than he ever had, but the feeling of chill wind blasting her hair back and the whistle of buildings and shapes flying by was a new thing. So close to the ground...a completely different feeling than flying with Broadway. Kei almost forgot why she was there--target practice, girl! Snake's voice brought her back.

"Yes," she replied. That was its own reminder; 'Snake' seemed more the sort to keep the personal private. No doubt there was a great deal of motivation behind it that she may never know.

That wasn't a problem.

Brought to attention, Kei lifted her gun and shifted, clutching his shoulder a little tighter while she moved. Eyes adjusted to the whipping wind, turned to watch the road ahead on her left. There was little light to work with in that Darkness, only the shapes playing off headlight or the shy moon hiding overhead. She traced the road with the line of her gun.

"Never had a mind for aliases. Nor the need."

"Good to know," he replied, maneuvering around the next corner -- it was weirdly quiet and empty around this part of the town, it seemed. Usually, that would already cause him to be twice as cautious as he already was, and with the company he'd brought even more so. The only weapons Jack had brought with him were a tranquilizer gun and an assault rifle; the latter of which he had still shouldered and wouldn't be quickly accessible in an emergency.

There were still his frag grenades. "We use codenames in my line of work. I've rarely heard anyone call me by my real name these last ten years. Come to think of it, I don't really know what you do for a living, aside from being a data analyst of some sort? I'm not sure." But I'd really like to know, he added in his mind. These were the things he wanted to know about a person, to make up for the lack of information everywhere else. Damn, he'd spent ten years at The Boss's side and didn't know anything about her until right before she died. He still didn't know everything. And EVA ( ... )

Suspicious shapes passed by without incident, and Kei's finger stayed reluctantly in place over the trigger. She had some silly notion about it, firing that gun here, as if it would make her imprisonment more real. Her body, her mind, the gun: the facet of her life here that this world hadn't yet gotten a hold of. It was still free. The first shot would lock a door that was already posing to be a damn pain to open back up. She'd held her fire on that first night, and already she let five, six shapes zip by unscathed.

She said nothing to his remarks at first, only listening curiously. He was some sort of soldier? Mercenary? It was hard to say. The former was less likely, she decided; so few in that line of work had it in them for chatting it up, especially while at work in some way. Maybe the latter. Chattier, for one, but less likely to care if they got a little friendly with a potential roadblock. It's easy to detatch and get on with things. She had a mind to counter--And I don't know anything at all about you, Snake, but he went on ( ... )

The fact that she didn't outright respond to anything he said left him with a feeling of insecurity -- did he talk too much? Was she not interested? He'd never been very good at doing smalltalk; being more of the taciturn kind usually, so-to-speak. Unless he took an honest interest in a person, in which case he started to ask questions. What's your name, where do you come from, what are the things and ideas that keep you going each day. Jack didn't want the people he spent time with to be nameless faces; one of those he'd end up killing sooner or later. Not like his personal attachment to someone would make a difference in the long run, though -- he'd proven that to himself. And paid for it. Every single day of his life. Maybe he really was just masochistic.

But -- this was different, wasn't it? The point of this nightly tour was shooting practice, and getting ahold of the things Kei needed to continue her research. Nothing more, nothing less. She wasn't here to get to know him better, or vice versa. It must confuse her, Jack thought ( ... )
