Godot had granted Daedalus the courtesy of setting his coffee aside while he ran the physical, and sat with his fingers pressed against the gauze from the blood test ( ... )

"It's nice to meet a doctor who understands a man partaking in one of the few pleasures in his life," Godot said earnestly, with a relieved sigh. It could probably be argued that "partaking in" was very different than "obsessing over" or "gorging on," depending on the common definition of whatever it was Godot did with his coffee.

He refilled the cup from his thermos. It had been almost ten minutes since the last one. "It makes me feel better," he said. "Placebo or no, I feel the difference."

Yes, Godot. That's called "withdrawal."

"A doctor who understands how to choose his battles." Daedalus corrected quietly, a mild shrug, passing him a prescription note.

There was clearly no hope of inspiring moderation, where the coffee was concerned. It it hadn't killed him yet, it probably wasn't anything his metabolism hadn't taught itself to process.

"So I see." He resisted the urge to roll his eyes, but did glance pointedly aside.

He took the prescription with another of his vague smiles. "I tell you. Nothing makes you feel more alive than a hot cup of the most sophisticated of flavors. I don't know if I'd have woken up without it."

Godot glanced over the prescription note and then back up at the doctor and his pile of medical papers. "It's good of you to do this for me," he said. "Let me know if there's any way I can make it up to you."

Yes, yes...the doctor's smile thinned, along with his amusement. There was only so much ode to coffee he could take in one shift.

But...it was good, in the medical profession, to make and keep friendly associations with people of the law.

"It's my pleasure any my duty as a citizen to do my job." He shrugged modestly, all the same. "...let's both hope I'll never have to call in any favors."

"I don't think a nice guy like you would ever have to run into me at work. But I'll just put it out there that I know a good defense attorney, just in case," Godot said. "And it never hurts to have a lawyer who feels like he owes you one. That's a rule to live by."

He stood up from the examination table, looking shaky again but quickly evening himself out with one hand steady on the table. "Anything else you need from me, doc?" he asked-- besides the urine sample, anyway, the cup for which he recovered from where he'd set it.

Indeed. Which was why he'd been careful about maintaining pleasantries with Miles Edgeworth...and the younger prosecutor (who was even more valuable to have on one's good side, seeing as she used a whip on the job).

Another brief fumble-and-recovery...smoothed to nearly unnoticeable, but Daedalus' mouth pursed in concern nonetheless.

"That should be all for a first visit." (well- after the necessaries of determining liver damage) "...and we'll stay in touch if you need to change medications. If you need acute care, you can consider me on call."

"Fortunately, I don't have as many medical emergencies as you might expect." A pause as he knocked down the last of his coffee and screwed the lid back on his thermos. "Somehow. But you'll be the first person I call if it comes up."

He held out his hand for a handshake. "I really can't thank you enough for all this, Dr. Yumeno."
