"Let me guess. You'd kill me, Father?" he asked, his voice slightly colder. His fingers tapped out a little tune silently against the bed while he mulled it over. If Liquid had been honest enough to admit it, he had become something of a master at repressing emotions for quite a long time. He'd had to. The only emotion that would aid him in battle was anger. It had become a pleasant companion, the only constant. It was almost the only emotion he truly understood.

He leant back, at last turning his head to look at the other man. "I'd comment on how foolish it is to expect me to fear death, but I'm sure Otacon, at least, would be unhappy if I got myself killed. How pitiful." What had he become, to care if someone was made unhappy in such a short time? Pathetic. He'd become everything he hated, in a sense. Weakened by emotion. Soldiers were not meant to need. His mind absently went to the few people here he actually liked. Pitiful though it was, he suspected his death would probably cause problems for them. He had things to do. It would ( ... )

"I'd rather avoid it."

And he was almost sure that Liquid's secret lover - if his suspicions prove to be true - would be rather unhappy as well. Now that he mentioned Otacon though...

Oh.

It couldn't be? There was a longer pause during which he furrowed his brow and tried to process the thought; but the worst was, it kind of made sense - if you disregarded all of Otacon's former warnings about Liquid, of course; but it wasn't impossible that they'd grown close, and you know the saying - the quarrel of lovers is the renewal of love - Ugh. He needed to stop wondering about that. He turned away again, back to his desk.

"Well, good."

There was a long and suspicious pause. What on earth was his Father's problem? He had no idea what the man was thinking, but there was something slightly alarming about what his Father had reacted to.

"...Father, I don't know what he's told you, but we do happen to be... friends here. At least, he claims so. I'm not one to understand these things. Is it really so absurd for us to have become relatively close during our time here? I mean, he's a sweet man. Delusional, but sweet."

Why the pause, though? Surely his father wasn't hiding something, right? Was the man planning something?

"...you know, there aren't many people that would cry if I died. Is it really that odd that I want to keep him happy?"

Liquid's sudden assumption was enough to make him blink in confusion. He hadn't said anything? Unless Liquid had gained the ability to read minds, which would be...really bad. Though honestly, Liquid's reaction just made it seem even more obvious. Close? Keep him happy?

"I didn't say anything," he tried to shrug it off, though he was grimacing - helped that he had his back turned to Liquid again and was busy with something on his desk. One of his guns. Cleaning them calmed him down considerably. "There's nothing wrong with that. I'm glad if you're getting along, makes things easier for me."

He somehow managed to sound innocent and serene, though his imagination was running wild and it was starting so seriously bother him. It's not his business what the two of them were doing! Just like it wasn't their business what he might be doing with others. Like Light.

...Or Snake.

"It's what you didn't say that bothers me. You're never stuck for words. Really, you'd think I was incapable of caring for anyone," he reprimanded. Despite the sharpness in his tone he seemed rather more relaxed. He moved to sit on the edge of the bed, watching the other man.

Liquid wasn't quite sure why his father thought it was a good idea to do... whatever he was doing right now. But then, this was the man that perfected insanity with squeaking sand and DEADLY POISONOUS ZANZIBAR HAMSTERS, so he really wasn't terribly surprised that he was acting odd. Really, the insanity had to start somewhere. He was just a little proud he'd never stooped to the level of tiny vermin as a defence maneouver. "So... am I in trouble?" he asked, a little warily. Part of him was tempted to ask why his father needed such a big bed for just him, but he suspected he wouldn't like the answer. At least he hadn't woken up chained to it. That would have been particularly horrifying in more than one sense.
