It's a black thing with a green coat and silly hat? Which makes me think magic of some sort.

Magic mentioned twice a day? Fact. Half the people here can do magic? Alright, that one is hyperbole, but a lot of people can. When you arrived, maybe you already had a special ability. You yourself admitted you hadn't had a reason to until now.

So at the most, I made one assumption.
