Hm. [Thinking about it, the kid's right. That's worrying. Did they damage something in the Core attack? It's not like they can go and check.]

Perhaps it's merely a glitch in the system.

A glitch?

[Dammit, Liquid's hardly the forefront of technology...]

That's right. Programs can have glitches; moments where they misread or skip over information and end up doing odd things.

[Best to try to sound informative at least.]

Can they fix it?

No one can get close to it. It's fatal to anyone who comes near it. But glitches don't usually last long. There'll probably be more people coming in in a few days.

Fatal?

It kills people. Anyone who comes near them are going to get killed.

Why?

[Best way to explain this to a child...] It's called radiation. It's like an invisible poison that it emits, which can pass through your skin. In small doses it's survivable, but the Core emits a large amount of it. No one knows why. It might be from its power source - radiation is emitted by certain types of energy supplies.

...I don't understand.

...hm. Alright. Let's put it this way.

Certain power sources, such as nuclear power, create high levels of radiation from the processes used to create the power. Generally, this radiation is contained. The Core, however, does not contain it, meaning that going near it will result in the radiation entering your body and destroying you from the inside out. In smaller doses it would cause severe illness, the inability to produce children and other harsh effects. In large doses, however, radiation will incinate you. It will burn you to ash.

[ . . . ]

So it makes ya' sick an' kills you?

That's right. But the Core gives off so much of this that it'll happen very fast.

I don't know. You have to get close to it before it'll do anything to hurt you, so I suppose it's a defense mechanismm.
