You didn't offend me at all. I'm just glad you're better.

Mm, je vois. I shouldn't have expected any less from a big, strong man like you.

You don't get raised for war without developing that. It helps you resist torture and to continue on when injured.

... [Okay, he outright laughs at that.] Only Germans and Russians do crazy things like that! Mon dieu! [Sorry, he's remembering the time Germany refused to tell the Allies anything and saying that he'd been trained to resist torture... and then Italy told them everything.]

[His voice sharpens.]

That's a completely false statement. The Patriots insisted on it - and they were wise to. I endured four years of torture thanks to that training and to my own stubbornness.

[... wow, way to ruin the mood. Francis' laughter dies off and his smile fades.]

... four years of... [And Francis is dumbstruck for a moment.

He mulls it over, quietly, for just a moment.] These "Patriots"... who are they?

The people that created me. A secret organisation - if my nanomachines were functioning properly, you'd never even be able to hear the name. They've been on the fritz since I arrived here. They profit from war. From a lot of things, really. They had... some sort of love for my father, for his skills as a soldier, so they created Brother and I to carry on after him.

Mm, je vois... [He grimaces, thinking about it a moment.] Can nanomachines... really do all that? It sounds so... 1987. [And that very thought makes him shiver.]

Yes, they can. I don't know how it works, but when speaking their name, usually only people authorised to hear it will hear the name. To anyone else, it will appear to be nonsense. "La li lu le lo".

Nanos aren't that old, I don't think. But through them, the Patriots have a stranglehold on the world that they wouldn't have otherwise.

... La li lu le lo? [He furrows his brow a bit.] Quite a corrupt political machine, if they can use such things for such purposes... dieu, to think they've got censorship already wired into someone's brain.

Censorship isn't the only thing they're trying to wire into brains. They're at the forefront of most major technological advances in the US - and most of them are hidden from the general public. Gene manipulation, involuntary experiments on humans, the cyborg ninjas, Metal Gear... All secrets hidden behind lies.

... hidden from the general public? [A scowl.] Well, I understand why you despise politicians so much, now.

As someone raised by them, I learnt fast the value of spies. I know more than they wanted me to - but then, I myself was a secret hidden from the public. I have no birth certificate, no family, no registration with any country as existing, not even a name - save that given to me by Zero.

[... well, you have your brother.] Oh, cher... I'm sorry...

[A brother who didn't know he existed until recently and whom he was trying to kill until a short while after coming here. Not to mention Snake dislikes the thought of being related to a monster like him.]

Why are you sorry, Francis?

[... but Liquid's not a monster :< Francis says so.]

It's more of a statement of sympathy than anything, Liquid.
