048. Distorted audio

Mar 14, 2011 01:38

[This is Light, but obviously he's not using his normal NV. The voice that echoes into the network is distorted, almost robotic, but clearly from the rhythm of the words not computer generated. He's unrecognisable, and will respond through either text or audio. Naturally a black and white L appears in place of video regardless of the medium.]

[There's...no way. There's no way it could be L. That's ridiculous.]

[There's no way it's L. It can't be. In fact, Mello's first instinct is to assume it's Kira, but then the self doubt creeps in. Why would Kira now of all times decide to take on L's persona? It just...doesn't make any sense.]

[The incredulous expression turns immediately into a frown, a wrinkling of his nose. If it's Kira, then there needs to be a motive, which really, isn't something that the murderer would be short of. If it's L, well...]

[Either way, things are going to be interesting - exciting even. Maybe. Hopefully. Near will probably shuffle his way into the living room soon enough. For now though? Mello will kick back on the couch, chocolate bar hanging out of his mouth. That frown has turned into a wicked grin.

Let the games begin, right?]

[Almost responded with the wrong NV there. Clever Joker. But for that he'll even pretend to look a little stressed out for you to keep his game safely on track.]

This isn't a great time, you know.

Why?

Pretending to harass the network as your dear, dead detective?

I know it's you, you know.

I killed L, remember?

[Light shakes his head, pressing his smile into grim rather than letting it become as cocky and victorious as it otherwise might.]

Did you forget? People come back here, even when you kill them. Besides, I don't have any motive for masquerading as him, it's totally out of the question.

I killed those that murdered my child, I've killed Nazis, and I've killed those who were attacking me or abusing my people. Was what I did 'justice'? No. There is no justice for those that would beat the elderly to death for boredom or hold a hot gun to the head of a mother while her child burns alive or the same to a child while his family is murdered. Their deaths then, are something we have to accept as some poor imitation of justice.

Vigilantes exist because the justice system is imperfect. If people wishes to stop them, then they must correct the problems.

Then it is the fault of the laws that vigilantes exist, and the right of anyone to kill someone that they deem to deserve it, even if the system itself dismisses them?

I don't promote anarchy.

[Pauses, because he's thinking.]

I've killed people. A lot of people. Some I regret, some deeply. Others, I regret that people had to die but there was no other way. Others? [A dark chuckle.] Give me a time machine I'll smother them in their cribs.

Taking the life of another because your life or the life of your family members is being threatened. I have no moral problem with that.

But to plan a murder...it's something more than survival. If the person is guilty. If they have no remorse. If they took the lives of others for sport, or pleasure, or committed war crimes. It is...more complicated. But killing those that commit war crimes or target innocent people...they deserve no less.

Some times people die during war - this is unavoidable however unfortunate. But that isn't the same as targeting innocent.

Who decides whether or not a person is guilty?
