How long should it take a person to get over something, I wonder? Something important, not something trivial - not a trivial disappointment, not something that anyone who's a bit grown-up should be able to brush off like it's nothing ( Read more... )

How Who are you Probably never. You never recover, it just gets duller until it doesn't hurt so bad.

Are you serious? You know that if that oil isn't cleaned up quickly it can have a long lasting effect on the environment, and the animal habitats. [ Maybe she had no idea. :I ]

Oh. [ ... she'd thought she was being sarcastic. ] Well, it does. Especially for the animals - it can destroy their habitat - we were lucky that so many people volunteered to clean the animals off too, or they would have died.

It's another form of pollution, contaminating the sea and land around us.

The release of a liquid petroleum hydrocarbon into the natural environment is typically categorized as an environmental disaster. It can affect marine plant life and phytoplankton via the prevention of photosynthesis due to the buoyant properties of petroleum products, and can also cause sedimentary erosion.

It affects animal life by reducing the thermal, aerodynamic and buoyancy properties of feathers and fur. Animals may also ingest the petroleum products, which leads to organ damage as well as metabolic instability and lowering of the immune system. While death may not occur, it is also possible for any offspring to experience these changes. Organisms such as amphibians may also suffocate. Bacterial colonies in the ecosystem may also be altered, as certain types of anaerobic and one type of aerobic bacteria utilize petroleum products as a source of fuel. This in turn changes the ecosystem's balance, and may cause it to collapse.

Metabolism is like digestion, right?

Metabolism is the biochemical processes of breaking down one substance to transform it into another. It is commonly used in describing the breaking down of food into fuel.
