[Gruff, masculine, smokers voice:] Define a 'leader'. A commander - And I'm looking for entirely subjective opinions. What qualities does a man - or a woman - have to possess that you would follow him or her no matter what, no matter where. What inspires you; what's worth your dedication? A great man with a great cause? Or maybe you don't follow ( Read more... )

[Yaaaay, woooork.]

I noticed. Don't worry. I'm not going to cause any more trouble on that front.

[Says the man who has already tied Snake down to his own bed in order to interrogate him - and has plans to cockblock the hell out of him and Otacon. THE POTENTIAL COCKBLOCKING SAVED YOUR EARS FROM BEING BITCHED OFF, BB.]

[Almost jokingly:] You could always try expanding underground.

[Oh god, yes, please, let's have an underground base .... housing giant robots.]

I'm not sure if the terrain is cut out for that. But it's worth a shot, and probably safer, too ... [seriously thinking about that.]

- And I hope. Don't make me regret I stuck you two in one room. [refering to you and Snake, obviously. If Otacon has to jump between something again... 8|]

Perhaps we should do some tests to find out. Nobody would expect an underground base beneath a warehouse - and we can reinforce the walls to lessen risks. [Guess who else is thinking seriously about it?]

...heh. Oh, don't worry. Nobody'll get killed over it. [Liquid sounds far too amused.]

It would be a big project, in any case. I should - get some [GET SOME, not KIDNAP SOME] professional to check it out. I know there's a basement, but I've never thought about expanding that. It could be a possibility.

[underground command base om nom nom ...

...we could even make it hexagon shaped. how about a nuclear launch platform -]

Good. One thing less to worry about.

I think you already know my answer, Boss. Good to see that you're finally taking my advice, too; we're not going to have any leg room at this rate with all the people coming to stay with us. Expansion is just what this place needs.

[Before people fall of the building and into the ocean, right ...]

You know all about that, don't you. Fine then, I'll cave. Where do we need to start?

With a contractor. Before we can even think about adding rooms, we need to get our priorities straight and think with a budget; would a gym be more beneficial than a shooting range at this point in time, do we have enough money to cover the costs of the construction as well has interior furnishings like equipment when it's done -- stuff like that.

Also, consider your new friend. Do you want to convert one of the empty rooms into a stable for him?

What do I even need a stable for? The ground floor is more than enough. And there's grass. That's what horses eat.

[What.]

Now that you're talking about budget, Kaz... you're actually contributing to it, right?

[This post. THIS POST. This post actually hurts her to hear it.]

I lead my own team, both here and back home. Almost every night, back home, we'd face countless dangers. I trusted them, all of them, with my life...and I still do. They're what make me strong.

Without a team, there is no leader.

[Oh? Mission accomplished.]

Of course. A leader is nothing without the force that backs him....huh.

You did? Aren't you a little too young for that?

What would a leader be without them? It would just be one strong individual on his or her own. They can be as strong as they want and have all the right qualities, but if they have no one who follows them, then they're alone.

What does my age have to do with it?

So a single man or woman can achieve nothing? Not ever? Do they always have to rely on the strength of others?

Experience. All right, let's talk like adults. Do you know what it feels like if one of your friends dies in your arms, from a wound they sustained while protecing you, the leader? Because it works both ways: A leader without a team is nothing, but so is a team without a leader.

I was a top level pirate, a certain amount of leadership skill comes with that. Of course I was using people. You can call it commanding, or leading, but it's the same thing. When you reach a position like that, you have to delegate authority. Any time you impress your will upon another, you're using them, no matter how others may dress it up as something noble.

There are men of the sea I respected, but I didn't look up to them. All I could think of was surpassing them. Then one day the fire just faded, and I grew tired of climbing.

Leaves me wondering if it should even be necessary to impress you will upon another. If a team, no matter how big, fights together, they usually share the same vision - or should, in any case. I'm not asking what someone like a career soldier would do; whose job it is to defend a country they've been born in without ever really knowing what they fight for, and why.

Orders must always be comprehensible; I understand that, even if feelings and visions rarely are.

So you use people. Perhaps they want to be used - perhaps they don't want to make any decisions on their own, so they trust someone else with that. How do you determine this person?

Re: video nakamadile September 20 2010, 19:36:35 UTC
Ah, yes. Soldiers, sharing the same vision. Brothers in arms, bound by blood and battle. Tripe. The bonds of brotherhood only go so far. When people are pushed past their limitations, you see their true nature. Humans are oxymorons in their nature. We're social creatures, who by all intents and purposes should do what's best for the group, for the greater good. At heart, however, we're all greedy and self-serving, no matter how many feel-good, heroic stories try to tell you otherwise.

The reason stories of good will and heroism are so well-touted, is because they're so RARE. They go against the nature of men. On the ocean I came from, this is the natural law of the world. Those who rule are those strong enough to attain that position. Strength is justice, and the strong define what justice is.

I bet you could find a few people around here who sure would use and betray them.
