[See Ken. See Ken staring at the pitiful contents of his closet for a moment. Behind him, on the bed, his school stuff has been spread everywhere and it partially covers the camera on his NV. That must be how it turned on.]Getting to wear whatever I want to school is weird. Why don't the public schools here in Canada have uniforms like the private ( Read more... )

Are the kids giving you a hard time, Ken-kun?

Not really a hard time...they're just ignoring me.

That's not right of them. [She sighs.] But...that's how a lot of kids treat someone new.

And a bunch of them were showing off the special things they can do. They asked me if I had any abilities....

I'm in 5th grade. I guess since we know English already now that we're here, they think we should learn something else?

I'm in the 9th. I was still in middle school back home, though.

I still think that's weird . . . Knowing English after coming here, I mean. Still- I don't think I can pass french.

And 9th is high school here...I wonder why that's different?

Yeah, it's really weird. It makes things easier though - how could we talk to people from completely different places if they didn't know a language we'd recognize?

Nuh-uh. I was in Iwatodai my whole life before coming here.

They'd treat you the same in Tokyo, unfortunately.

You had to wear uniforms to school? [nosewrinkle] I didn't have to at my old one. Not until Junior High.

At least Tokyo would've been the same country.

Yeah, we had to wear uniforms even though we were still the elementary school. I didn't think I'd actually miss it.

You already gotta learn French?

Yeah. The teacher said something about Canada having two official languages.

Weird. Mean I guess we caught a freebie with the English thing. [Which. Still baffles him.] Mitsuru should be able to help you out with it if you need.

I'll probably need her help even though I'm doing my best.

[only went to school very shortly, but hey, growing up in the military is almost the same, right?]

If you want to be accepted, you need to draw their attention and point out your strong points without changing yourself. If they won't notice you depite your best efforts, then they're not worth it. Many kids are close-minded and afraid of new things. Show them they have no reason to be.

Maybe I'll do some of that. This is all new to me too, after all.

You'll get used to it before long. I wager it's the same everywhere.

Do the grownups have trouble getting used to it here too?
