[Liam is sitting at a table in the library. It looks as if some sort of literary bomb has exploded. In a uncharacteristically messy moment he's spread out over half the table, covering it with open books with various bookmarks and dog-eared pages, and there are scraps of paper with half-finished notes strewn between yet more stacks of books. You could get swamped in technical information fairly quickly.

I suppose it's mainly a question of what you're looking to do professionally?

If you need help using personal computers, I believe there are evening courses for that, or tutorials at the library. Word processing and database organization might be a good place to start.

For a broad overview of technology...a good starting point would be Siren's Port's Museum. There's a hall of 20th century developments- get your history in line first, then look into a bit of circuitry, and understand the basics of computer networking.

Most of what's here seems a bit archaic, for me, so...I've been backtracking.

I couldn't dream of doing this professionally-- not for a long time, at least. I've already signed up for a library tutorial but I'd like to understand a bit about how it works, too.

Thank you. It seems a bit odd to start in a museum but I suppose it makes sense, all things considered. I'll take a look.

Where are you from that this seems archaic?

Why don't you speak to Professor Emmerich, at Sirens Port University?

I'm...from some time after, presumably. Romdeau had a far more advanced system, in many ways.

Professor Emmerich...? I'm not familiar with the name. Who is he?

It's difficult to imagine a system more complex than this. It seems that no one would be able to stay on top of the technology.

I... don't think the books really prepare you for most of the technology.

But, um-- any sort of cakes?

Why not? That's what they're for, isn't it? It's certainly better than trying to figure it out without instruction.

If they're sweet and taste good, they'll do. The taste is more important than the presentation, if that's what you're getting at.

Words on paper don't seem to convey most of it very well...

Ah. There's one in Sector 9. It's small and easy to miss, but they're the best in the city in my opinion. [insert directions!]

They're imperfect, but they do help. Perhaps you're reading the wrong books.

Ah, thank you! You've saved me a lot of trouble, sir.

Start with the phonograph and work your way up. Are you trying to learn for the sake of knowing?

It doesn't seem to progress in a linear fashion, though. It does to a point and then it falls apart into an incomprehensible mess of subfields.

Yes. Life here seems completely dependent on technology, so I feel that I ought to at least understand the basics.

Basics would be automobiles, lighting, plumbing, kitchen appliances, elevators and computers. Most of those you only have to experience to know well enough.

Perhaps, but I can't trust a giant metal contraption to take me up and down ten floors-- or through the streets at high speeds-- without understanding how it runs.

Well, it would be easier on my budget to learn to bake my own cakes eventually. But you know that he won't even consider moving in if I don't have some ready when he arrives.

In the loosest sense of word. Maybe. Probably not. Why do you ask?
