{First on the nv, simple marks, a few Japanese characters written out. Random words, testing how it works. “Moon”. “Pen”. “Stand”. “River”. After a few moments, these die out into random squiggles, then tiny drawings; a small bird perched on a flower, a star shape, a tree.

Still in Japanese, written:Please excuse me. Can anyone else read ( Read more... )

An apt comparison if there ever was one, miss. I'm afraid I don't recognize you, but to answer your question, yeah -- we can pursue jobs here, even rent apartments. Despite the fact that we had no say in the matter with being brought here, we do have a lot of freedom with what we can do.

What's your name?

Ha ha, well, that's better than a lot of things. After you've been dragged around by the scruff enough you might as well take to your own two feet eventually, right? Unless you've forgotten how. But I guess it was a quick trip. That's not so bad. I'm Rin. {pause.} And who are you?

Kazuhira. That's a pretty wise way to look at it. Honestly, we're better off on our own here; the natives are, from what I can determine, none too pleased about our presence in their city so we only have ourselves to rely on and what friends we make here.

[a beat]

That's a really interesting dialect you have. Very antiquated, but elegant. It suits you.

...[she laughs. it's a somewhat strained sound.]

Thank you, but I think we've traded ten sentences.

Lost those, miss...? -- Did you, ah, arrive from another place that wasn't your home? [educated guess!]

[with a small pause.]

As long as it's during the day, you can go almost anywhere. And find a job at any place, yes.

People do come in like that?

We can read and see those characters. You have a book for an NV?

[hm.]

There's a few, I think. From Edo, that is, though they call it Tokyo in modern times.

A scroll. {a slight pause.} My time is modern.

Then you really do need a brush... How does video work?

[more importantly,]

Mm. Your time was modern two centuries ago.

I know. I borrowed the pen.

I gather that I'm out of time. Just because they've changed it doesn't make Edo illegitimate.

I can read it, with some difficulty. They seem like old characters. Where I come from, we write them this way-

[Pasting in the modern equivalents.]

{a dictated sigh, and then she speaks back, in Japanese.}

I guess times have changed. Who are you? Is it really difficult?

[Her dialect is...unfamilair, but not intelligible. He probably sounds much the same to her.]

I'm not an expert in languages, so it's troublesome for me. My name is Irie.

Irie? I'm Rin. Hello. {pause. it is difficult to understand him, but not insurmountable, and she doesn't want to stop.} Have you been here a long time?

It wasn't home, it was just a place where I was.
