Itachi was happy to leave the 'cover' behind. If Orochimaru still believed he was a loyal member of the Akatsuki, and as amoral as he was, that was all to the best. He let his lips curve into a smirk, and then moved towards Sasuke and gently lifted him into his arms.

"I suppose I've never seen the value of your work to quite the same extent you do," he said, cradling Sasuke against his chest. He seemed so light, so insubstantial. "You can try to convince me of it some other time."

Orochimaru did not back up from his position near the body, but he did lose some of his relaxed posture. He doubted Itachi would try anything, but it was only natural with him being so close.

"Perhaps," was his only response. He had not expected Itachi to understand. Most people did not, and Orochimaru was fine with that. It was the few with vision who did that he sought out. The rest were simply ignorant fools.

Itachi's own body thrummed with tension also at being so close to the other man. He looked up at him, lips pressed tightly together. So long as this man was experimenting without any controls on his behaviour, everyone on the island was in danger. He should do something, but he had no idea what to do.

Finally he simply inclined his head to the older man. "I am grateful to you for contacting me," he said softly. "I hope the next time we meet it'll be under better circumstances."

And he turned to leave, holding Sasuke tightly against his chest.
