What I'd do if you gave me what I wanted? I never asked for you to love me in return, only for acknowledgement, so what you'd get, I suppose, is grounded trust and affection. Reciprocation is like a drug, Jack--I should know, I've used it on enough people, given them just enough to keep them sweet. You get back what you put in.

But you... You'd rather have my hatred. You'd rather have the danger of an enemy, and the enjoyment of keeping him chained--the thrill of knowing what might happen if he fights long enough to break your hold over him. I don't get it.

[Good thing this is just voice, because he's starting smirk a little. What Light says is true, of course, but like hell he would admit that - he has a hard time admitting it to himself, that he can be sadist as much as masochist, and that he'd rather nurture an enemy than an ally. He'd do the very same thing with his clones, who are supposed to be his equals.
