[ Somehow the NV is transmitting. He could almost swear he heard a voice and stops moving around for a moment. But maybe that little interdimensional ride is just making him delusional. Or something. Buuut since there's nothing else, all that can be heard is: ]

[ Okay, that is definitely a voice and it sounds like it's coming from his utility pack. Kakashi stops again, and the sounds of motions -- things clicking, fabric swishing, wind rushing about -- stop abruptly. Then there's the sound of jarring movement: he must have found the NV and has taken it out. ]

[ This is a face Kakashi knows well. A face Kakashi never thought he'd see again. And he remembers the smell of blood, thick in the air, like the smoke from black flames burning everywhere. It was a scent that scorched, burned the back of throats.

Itachi had died then, or so they were told -- Itachi had died, and Sasuke was nowhere to be found. But here he is now, looking through the screen of this little device. And Kakashi's in this strange weird world, trying to find a way back home, but the one person he never thought he'd expect to see is the one that's supposed to be dead. ]

[ When he was four, he believed that death was just falling asleep for a very long time. That people closed their eyes and went away, but eventually, they'd find their way back again. Sleep back then was something like death, or so he thought: closing his eyes and going away from the world. And there was nothing to fear about it -- you fall asleep, open your eyes, start the day again.

Death was something you could come back from, when he was small.

He knew better a year later, when he saw a man growing into the ground. Crows had picked out his eyes.

And yet, Itachi is here, but Sasuke is not. The irony isn't lost upon Kakashi, who grips the device in his hand, sending out a flare of chakra to try and find that familiar chakra signature that he could never possibly forget. ]

Itachi.

[ He says, and the name is delivered cautiously, memories of Madara and snow and words he could not possibly believe swirling through his mind. ]
