[The sun's starting to go down, but the Sirens haven't sounded yet. Misato's not too far from work and has more than enough faith that she'll make it before it's too late. For now, she's sitting on a bench with her NV on her lap, pointed outwards so that it captures people going to and fro before the Darkness sets in. One might not realize it's ( Read more... )

[It takes Ro a minute to figure out what's going on from the video, but not too long.]

I thought having a year skipped on me was bad. I'm technically supposed to be an extra year older myself, but I decided it's simpler to just celebrate ONE birthday.

[Snort.] But happy sort-of birthday anyway, Misato. You might wanna get inside though.

This is technically three years in the past. It's going to be strange if it gets to 2014 and I'm still here.

[She turns her NV over to face her and beams.]

Don't worry about me, Rochelle. The office is a block away. I can be there in no time.

Really? Damn. Again, I thought being a year ahead of home was weird. [A grin to her voice.] Maybe you can make money predicting the future for us now.

Okay, well. Good enough, but just keep your eye on the time, okay?

[Misato wasn't gonna get too much argument from Rochelle when it came to the Darkness.]

Too late for that. A lot of things never happened here, so everything's different for it.

[Oh, hell no. This won't stand, not at all.]

Misato, where are you?

A block away from the SERO building. Why? [Oblivious to the danger Misato is oblivious... Well, that and she's taken her precautions.]

[She's putting on her coat and grabbing her purse.]

Stay where you are. I can be there in about five.

You really don't have to do that, Snow.

Didn't expect to make it this far?

I don't think anyone really expects that deep down.

[He smirks darkly at that. Fair enough.]

People at large take death a little too heavily then, if that's the case.

Can you blame them? Mortality is something all humans share. Worst still, humans are fundamentally afraid to be alone. And what's death but the ultimate loneliness?

You know, I'm surprised that more people don't mention this particular issue.

How to deal with birthdays, you mean?

Precisely. I'm sure it mustn't be uncommon for people to arrive here close to a birthday that passed back home. Personally, I rounded up. There was barely a week to go, anyway.

It gets even more complicated when your last birthday was four years in the future.

I'm going to be treading dangerous ground here, I know, but is it alright to say Happy Birthday?

Because I'm going to say it. Maybe even sing a little.

[She laughs] Don't worry. So long as you don't ask me how old I am, the sentiment's appreciated. [She turns the NV around so he can see her wink.]

Yeah, don't worry. My aunt raised me better than that.

[ A beat. ]

So, how's the view from up there?

It's kinda nice seeing people braving being caught out this close to sirens. The days are getting shorter and people are getting bolder. Sometimes you just have to stop and appreciate that.
