If you are loyal to another and want to see them safe and happy because that person makes you happy then that's usually referred to as 'love'. Calling it mere selfishness simply does not work because you are not the only one to benefit. You may be fulfilling your own desires but you are doing it by fulfilling another person's as well.

This is all very basic groundwork for a functional society.

Whether anyone else benefits is coincidental. "Selfless" acts are done so that one may feel good. It is quite rare that anyone does anything out of the true goodness of their heart.
