[It's a while before this vampire's daughter speaks up-- more because she's been following each and every one of the conversations. Well, whatever is not locked away from her. Although she would normally have a blank, doll-like expression, tonight, her eyebrows seem to crease with worry and perhaps moreso, frustration ( Read more... )

Is there a particular aspect you want to learn about it, or simply more of a general overview?

An overview first would be helpful. I can ask more questions later on.

I wrote up such a list several months ago after several requests from individuals who were unaware of the laws of this city. Here is a copy of that list. By all means, it is not a completely conclusive one, so do feel free to inquire further if you have any additional questions.

[She peruses the copy.]

... I see...

Everyone who have done these... are they persecuted?

[After a little bit of static, a southern drawl is heard.]

There anything you 'specially want to know about, bambina? Can't say I can explain the whole damn lawbook, but I can try to give you answers about the specifics.

[What a strange... way of speaking...]

I want to learn about how justice works here. I came from a time in the far past, sir.

[It gets weirder from here, dearest.]

Welp, I reckon it all depends on where you're from and what you're askin' fer. I figure most human laws are pretty standard no matter what town you mosey into - thou shalt not murder or steal or any of that stuff.

I came from the 16th century, sir. It was a time of war and corruption. It taught me that the law was never fair to the poor. I want to know if there had been any difference between then and now.

[Live, from his hiding place, it's Saturday Night Daddy!]

Do not fear the law, Amy. I do not intend to gamble my fate with it.

I don't want to keep separated like this, Father.

[He pauses, and sighs.]

I know, my dear. I know. With any luck I shall be vindicated soon.

I will not leave you. I promise you that.

If you are torn away from me, I will see to it that you are freed, Father.

You can't fully trust something you never know about. It's a wise decision to learn.

I was born into a world where the law was but a joke on the poor. I've never grown out of my mistrust for systems of justice.

I can see how that would make you caution. It seems like the people here don't favor our position as newcomers at all.

And thus I cannot trust the law here either.

I can answer some of your questions, as someone who's actually been imprisoned for a crime in this city.

Imprisoned... what was it like, sir?

Probably not like the prisons where you're from. Better than the prisons in my world, too ( ... )

[She pauses. She's a little shocked by the information.]

It sounds... like a luxury compared to even a life in the slums back home.

[Somehow, she feels assured that if her father was imprisoned, he wouldn't be subject to flogging or torture or near death as what happened to hoodlums during her time.]
