[The audio is clear and crisp; a man's voice, with a distinct southern American lilt to it, warm and friendly. If you've heard Sylar's voice before, you won't recognise it now, since the accent is false.Well hey there, Siren's Port. Fancy this old watch of mine being some kind of phone. A watch should be a watch, right ( Read more... )

[ why does that voice sound... familiar. But not. Huh. ]

What do you want to know about them?

[The slightest hesitation. He recognises that voice. You're the reason he's being nice and quiet, Peter. He doesn't want a confrontation yet. So he chooses his words carefully, and plays them with no little excitement.]

Oh, you know, anything you can tell me. It's like in the comic books, right? People who can fly, and shoot lasers out their eyes?

[ Peter: ever the oblivious. ]

Right, yeah. Not a lot of people who can shoot lasers, though. At least that i've seen.

Huh. You know, I've always wanted to learn how to fly.

[Another pause.]

Spandex isn't obligatory, is it? Seems like there's a lot of that going round.

[There's the crack of gum.]

No, not everyone has powers. The Core gives powers to some, some arrive with them, ya know, all that sort of fun stuff.

But if you've got any questions, feel free to ask. Most of us are pretty open with stuff.

[Searching for that voice in his mind. No, he doesn't recognise it. Carry on. He's very dogged; watch as he pursues his topic and forgets about niceties like saying 'thank you' or asking her for her name.]

So there's no catch? No innoculation, or something, just this Core? What is it, some kind of power library?

[And even if it was, how would you go about borrowing from that library?]

Nope, no catch. The Core's... well, it's the thing powering the slip that drags us Newcomers here. Supposedly, the radiation is wicked and not something you can get past, but it's sittin' nice an' pretty under the baseball diamond.

[Another crack of gum. He's given his name. If he doesn't want hers? Okay. Whatever.]

[Radiation, huh. Human atom bomb. You and he have a lot in common, Jubes.]

Really? So close?

Not everyone has powers here, but very many do and it is accepted as a fact of every day life. They are extremely varied, and even the terminology and the proposed mechanics behind them can change depending on where a person claims to come from.

Is that right? So you're saying that the powers work in different ways?

[Problematic.]

So do you not have one? A power, I mean?

[He's not sure he believes that. He wants to see.]

No. [Technically a lie, but it's not like she could demonstrate it anyway, even if she had wanted to (which she doesn't).] I hardly see it as a necessity, so it does not bother me in the slightest.

Oh. [Another pause, as he thinks about whether or not she's even worth talking to, but he thinks it must be a lie. Everyone has powers--that was what his Greeter said. Everyone.] But isn't it boring being normal? Haven't you ever wanted to be something more?

[A little of the accent has gone, but he rescues it, and smiles through his teeth.]

I feel like a kid at Christmas--guess I'm just overexcited is all.

[He rarely got anything but snowglobes and antique watches as a child, so he can't really relate. It sounds right, though. It sounds less threatening.]

[ Having trained extensively in voice-mimicry, Damian notices the false accent. It's something to be suspicious of, but he won't expose it until he has reason to. ]

Is this some kind of vacation to you?

That depends a lot on the accomodation. How many stars, do you think?

For a newcomer? One.

At best. [ Life is hard. ]

Then it's not much of a vacation, is it? Have to say I didn't go much on the flight, either. The landing was lousy.

[It's a New York accent underneath. Cleverly hidden, yes, but Damian should be able to pick it out the longer he speaks.]

[Text. He can do text. But it's written like he talks, because he isn't typing. It also means the punctuation is all wrong.]

Do you do that a lot? Stopping break ins.
