I really don't know what to think now. I'm hoping it's just a fluke of some sort, but things usually aren't that simple in this city.

I didn't have any water, but of course they would have used water to make the coffee - though it would have been boiled.

I'm not personally concerned - I live with a doctor with a paranoid streak, I'll be told if I'm showing symptoms. And everyone seems fine. But it seems worth noting in case this happens to anyone else.

Oh, no. We didn't have the Darkness, there were lots of large corporations but nothing like AGI or SERO, the governments - the whole world was open so there was more than one - were much more important than the corporations most places, and very few people had powers.

But if you had powers - which I do and did - there were a lot of people who wanted to hurt you and/or use you, and many of them would pretend to be friendly, helpful, and such in order to take you by surprise.

My world seems to have a bit more in common with this place then.

Not everyone had powers, but the ones who did and whose powers were useful were usually put to use.

That sounds disturbing. Then again, the country which made the most of powers in my world took away the empowereds' free will to control them. It didn't work out well in a number of ways.

It's more like there were plans for them to be drafted by the government to work for them, though I don't really know if that is indeed what happened - I was too young back then to really understand what was going on. It wasn't really something people talked about.

Took away their free will? How did they do that?

Fortunately, there's no one alive who really understands the process. Some people threw the old government out of power and left, and then there was a civil war, and then more civil war, and then someone with powers was invited to come in and take over if he could.

Surgery was involved, and mental tampering, and a second skin.

Not really. After that country became a usually-decent place to live someone destroyed it.
