[Dance music thumping distantly in the background, mostly indistinguishable but for the bass. He's at Fangtasia, actually, tucked away in one of the back rooms. But there's no video to give that away.

He sounds much more animated than usual, talking faster than his typical lazy drawl (although not precisely hyper):]You guys, death isn't even real ( Read more... )

I don't think I get it... But even if people don't die for real, a lot of people grew up thinking that death is a really bad thing. So it's not that easy to just not care all of a sudden. And it's okay for people to be sad that their friends have gone home, too.

It's not about good or bad or okay or not okay. See, time isn't a line. It's like... an ocean. And we're all floating in it. But then there's this island here in the middle of the ocean, and anybody can turn up on the shore and stay a while. Then maybe they go for a swim and float out there in the ocean some more.

But there's nothing to be sad about, 'cause your friends just went for a swim. And there's always a way back.

But not everyone comes back from that swim.

They're still out there. Enjoying themselves. Doing what they wanna do. Why're you sad?

The bit about not being sad about losing people.

Well, 'cause... why would you be sad about something that hasn't happened?

What if here's the only somewhere they get to be?

No, see, the only thing that's special about this place is that we can observe a phenomenon that's actually universal, confirming something which was until this point only a theory.

What I'm saying is that even if you remember your friend dying, they aren't dead. They're alive. They're always alive, because they once were alive.

But they're alive in some other dimension out there. Just carted off somewhere else, every time?

Yeah, basically. Yeah.

Whether or not there's a point, it's still not really something you can control. Being sad about losing someone. It's natural.

What? No, you can totally control that.

As a telepath, I can control anything about my thoughts and emotions I choose to. It's not necessarily a good idea ... and most people can't, or there would be much less of a market for psychiatrists, psychologists, and therapists.

Yeah, well, we don't have brain doctors in my world.
