I know of no one who calls themselves Thief. What is his appearance?

Oh, well, all sorts of things, really. Lately he's in braces and a bowtie, but that him might not be here. It could be an earlier him. Or later. I've seen them all but they haven't all seen me. Well they have, but they might not exist yet.

Thief? You should be careful what you call for around here or a thief might actually find you. Oh but the Doctor? You know him too? He's a fairly popular fellow, though I suppose I could see why.

Oh but, are you alright miss?

Oh, but I'm certain I want my Thief. He always finds me. And I find him, too. It's how we're designed.

He is? Well where is he? He should be here. Thief! Thief, are you listening?

I don't know any thieves, I'm afraid. But if you're meant to meet him, then he'll be here eventually, right?

...isn't time usually linear?

He has to, yes.

Of course not.

How is that possible? Time progresses naturally from one point to the next.

Time is always there. It's always moving and forever at a stand-still. It's a giant web, reaching out and enveloping everything, but it most certainly isn't a straight line.

Is it? Do you know the year? This is Earth, correct? So at least it isn't the Hunoborus System. July is always horrible there. It's not a Saturday by chance, is it? I've never liked Saturdays.

I'm afraid I've not been here long enough to know the year. Nor have I heard the world's name. I do recall mention being made of Canada, though, should that mean anything.

Canada is certainly a country on Earth, so I expect that's where we are. Not surprising, really. I'm always stuck on Earth at some point or another. Especially on Saturdays. Dreadful days, really.

How long have you been here?
