Well... if you're safe, you're safe, right?

And if not, then you probably don't have time to worry.

Yeah, but. How do you just get used to living like that? It's so extreme compared to- how it was back home.

Well, do you think about it a lot?

[This is a young man's voice, steady, quiet and very calm.] There are a great many unbearable truths most people know but do not allow themselves to think about - the human mind is adept at compartmentalizing that which does not suit us at the moment.

Imminent mortality is part of the human condition. Whether it is constantly traveling in cars, consuming food that contributes to heart disease, a hole in the ozone layer or the presence of flesh-eating bacteria that constantly evolves - the world does not lack for mundane things to be afraid of, and that is disregarding the unpredictability of human nature.

The monsters are simply one more thing. One prepares for them as much as possible, and remains careful and safe.

Worrying about it will do nothing but deprive one of sleep - rendering one less alert in case there should be trouble.

And if you can't help but worry? What if you're not supposed to be as worried or scared or useless to do anything, but you are anyway?

What good does knowing how humanity works, then?

Well, when my little sister gives way to those sort of anxieties, I used to read her stories, or brush her hair. [warmly]

Even in the darkest places, there is light. I have to be sure of that - I don't know how else to convey it. Fearing the unknown only gives it power over you, you have to trust in yourself to be able to face whatever happens next.

Umm... well for me, I mostly just stay indoors and hide when the darkness comes around. Or run really, really fast. To be fair, I'm used to dealing with monsters and things being a mage of the guild Fairy Tail, but that doesn't mean I'm very good at it on my own.

[Oh that is a cat. A little blue cat. A talking one-- another talking cat. ... Oh he's kind of cute.]

Don't you ever get scared? What do you do, then?

Usually hide behind Natsu, who's a friend of mine. Usually it's best to have friends that you can rely on to help you through such things. Also if you can get yourself to be stronger, to be able to fight the monsters, then you can help yourself and others. Unless you're sick or something, anyone can become stronger, but having a group of friends to rely on is definitely a good thing to have.

You just do.

Deal with it, I guess. I mean, people either can or can't.

You okay?

Yeah, I'm fine. [He lets out a huff.] Just this island being... itself.

People could stay inside, though, if they can't cope. A lot of people do.

.. You sure? [Gentle prodding]

And staying inside doesn't really do a whole lot besides keeping yourself safe. Everyone still knows what's out there; it's like.. a nightmare.

While it may not be easy there is no alternative other than knowing and accepting the knowledge.

No, I know. I was just.. maybe looking for tips. If any actually exist, on dealing with it. I don't exactly have a therapist on hand, either..

I am not certain if I know any to give, though I do understand your questioning. For most where I come from the knowledge of creatures - albeit not entirely similar nor dissimilar to those in the Darkness - is unknown. For those that do discover them or are brought into the knowing? [ She remembers well how she first felt, and the reaction that Will had when he began working for her ] It is easy to see why people become shocked. It's enough to know the things that humans can do but the knowledge that creatures of myths are in fact real?

I can only advise that any exposure - if you must expose yourself to the Darkness - is done gradually, and minimally with the threats present. Learning about the creatures - even creatures of other worlds if not the Darkness - may also help. It will inform you about them but also help provide you with a defence if one is needed.
