☣ o15; [video]

[The video feed starts with a screen of bright blue; one that only shows itself to be something other than a technical error when a wisp of white rare to the sky today peeks into view. The microphone rumbles with the breeze whipping across it. After a moment of this, things seem to calm, and the camera is turned on Kazuhiko's face ( Read more... )

[Liquid is downstairs when he notices it. He wouldn't have cared - Kazuhiko has the right to the use of his own NV after all - if he had not noticed the video. That was the sky. Kazuhiko was outside? At the least he's grateful for the angle of the video; it kept the location hidden. However, that still meant that the man was exerting himself while he was meant to be recovering.

He heads to the room without a thought, hoping that's where the man is and that he hasn't just gone wandering.]

Kazuhiko Amamiya.

[His voice could probably chill a fire.]

It is. But it's possible.

[He shakes his head slowly.] I'm not. I helped you because you are a friend, and one that needed help. And because I was worried for you. For all of you. But that's selfishness, not kindness. I didn't want to lose you and I didn't like to see you suffering.

And if I don't want to?

Who told you that protecting and wishing to prevent suffering is selfish? [Now he has a bit of a worried expression.]

Then you're more of a masochist than you seem. [An interesting parallel.]

Nobody. For most people, acts of kindness are wrapped in selfishness. They do them because it makes them feel good to. It eases their guilt, boosts their ego, and lessens the amount of unhappy things around them. There are very few people who are kind for kindness' sake.

It's not a bad thing. That type of selfishness helps more than any other. But in my case... my reasons for helping you were entirely selfish. Because there are people in that body I wish to keep happy.

Perhaps. [An awkward smile.]

To try and keep someone happy, that isn't selfishness. There might be selfishness in other reasons for your actions, but not that one.

What other reasons might there be? [Utterly calm and open, inviting even. To know and to understand is the gateway to helping.]

Are there any? It makes me unhappy to see you suffer. Therefore, by easing that suffering, I ease my own. That is not selfish?

In your body... there is somebody I love, somebody I consider a friend, and somebody that I have recently met whom I have already become fond of. I don't want to lose any of them. Those are plenty of reasons, aren't they?

[A soft laugh and a shake of his head.]

Liquid Snake, you... are quite an amazing person.

...ah-?

[Wait what.]

What do you mean, Kazuhiko?

[His head just continues to shake, his eyes heavy as he stares at the ground. There's a static in his head, behind his eyes. Kimihiko's words are still ringing in his head, making it hard to think about much of anything else.

After a long moment, he speaks:] To think so highly of me.

[Liquid doesn't hesitate before reaching out to grasp Kazuhiko's arm gently.]

You're a good person, and one who is good for its own sake. Of course I'm going to think highly of you.

[His eyes look up to Liquid.]

I'm not a good person for the sake of being good. Though I'm not exactly angry that it comes off that way.

Well. It's close enough. [He relaxes, staring off at the sky thoughtfully.]

Whatever your reasons, you're one of the few people I don't believe has any bad intentions. That's a rarity.

[Kazuhiko's eyes shift up, as if to try and see whatever Liquid's looking at.]

My good intentions have still ended in people losing their lives, so it's hard for me to think of them as good.

You know what they say. The road to hell is paved with good intentions.

That doesn't make them anything else but good intentions. Even if they turn out badly.

No, it makes them good intentions that turn out bad. They have their own classification, not to be compared to well ending good intentions. [Another awkward smile.]

No matter the ending, the intention behind them gives it the meaning. If it turned sour it turned sour. I've had my share of missions that went wrong.
