I'll tell you what, Siren's Port. You know what I miss, is the newspaper. When was the last time you held an honest-to-God newspaper in your hands--just smellin' that ink, really smellin' it-- Reading it on these little screens, it isn't the same ( Read more... )

Waste of trees.

Hardly a waste. It's a preservation of history itself. There's a permanence. And it's a matter of satisfaction! All this cold, clinical business--disappointing, very disappointing.

Are you honestly complaining because you didn't get a warmer greeting?

No. I'm complaining at the state of things. The world, or what I've heard of it so far. It's enough of a, a-- it's like something out of a picture show as it is, and then you add no newspapers on top of that--and you have to ask, what has the world come to.

But the greeting was a little cold at that.

Haha...You got no idea.

Gore-a-go-go is what we live for in this burg, sonny.

Now, that's not just here, is it. That's the same the world over. That's what sells the papers that I'm talkin' about.

I do so love an admiring public.

What's so great about smelling ink, anyway?

It's the little things, son--that's what's great about it. You have to be able to appreciate the little things before you can move on, up and up the ladder. It's stopping and smelling the roses.

Ink doesn't smell like roses, last time I checked. And I don't want to smell roses, either.

And I never said it did. I can see metaphors aren't your thing, son, so let's keep this simple. What I mean is this: there is beauty in simplicity. Can you appreciate that?

[The smallest of pauses.]

So the circus is in town, is that what I should get out of this?

The circus is in town? I didn't see an announcement in the news.

[He puts his cigar in his mouth, a little absently. It's not lit, but it's comforting.]

You. I'm talking about you. What are you a, a house-cat? Standard size?

Don't know why you would want to work. Waste of time.

Still, if you need a light, I've got one. [holds up his cross pendant]

There are a lot of arguments that I could employ to answer that question, and all of 'em would end with "it isn't a waste of time"--but let's skip that for now.

That's not a lighter.

[Give you a little smirk and clicks it, the little fire popping up at the end. Just to prove his point, he promptly lights his own cigarette and blows smoke toward his NV.]

[He raises his eyebrows, slowly.]

Well. Look at that. It is a lighter.

If you're offering a light, I won't turn you down.
