The person I'm protecting doesn't seem to like the person... but THAT person is a higher rank from me! How can I protect my person if I'm supposed to follow the not-nice person's orders?

In situations like that, look only at your objective. Your charge should be safe no matter whom it is that poses a potential threat.

If the threat isn't immediate, search for the best way to either prevent conflict or neutralize it as peacefully as possible should it occur regardless.
