[ A finger to her chin, thoughtful. ] Well, she was really horrible at cooking, but she always did her best. There was one time she made me a birthday cake that blew up in our kitchen...

... Somehow I get the feeling that isn't what you were looking for.

She did, even if she didn't always know how! We were a lot closer after my father died.

She smelled of violets and always came to my school things, no matter how far out, or inconvenient, or long.

I remember that my mom used to love listening to Enya, reading romance novels, wearing make-up and drinking red wine. When I said 'Mama', she just knew that something was wrong with me, she'd take me to my grandmothers lavender farm on the weekends.

[Everything is said fondly, as if things hadn't changed in the past few years or that it had just been yesterday. And then, her voice turns cold-]

Then she remarried.

[ he listens to her politely, taking in every word... and he was ready to reply with something more or less lighthearted... until he picked up that tone in her voice. ]

And... that was a problem?

Yeah, it was. I still love her and all but there's not enough room in her life for me and the step-loser.

You and I are pretty similar, then.

Because today is Mother's Day. I was merely curious.
