I hope you’ve had a great holiday season, and I look forward to a new year! I apologize for the length of this post, but we've got a lot to address.
I know that things have been a bit hairy and frustrating around SP-land, that some have have loading and comment-view problems, and we’ve been keeping an ear to the ground about your initial feelings on release 88 and LJ customer service. It is within the power of the community to determine our best course of action from here, but the modteam has had the time for a sit-down to look at the situation, and we’ve narrowed our options to three major ones. Now it’s up to you to let us know what you’d like.
Here are our 3 major options on the table.
Staying on LiveJournal- Community layout coding will be overhauled by Feb 1st to offer a more functional community viewing style/loadable comment pages, with subject lines and pulldown icons. Ideally we will be able to keep a sidebar or header of easily navigational game information. We continue to invite feedback on what you'd like to see in terms of layout, and updates on any suggested workarounds.
Moving to Dreamwidth- A fresh community start with a move over tentatively scheduled for the first week in February, also with a new layout overhaul. We will plan to negotiate with DreamWidth to allow for enough invite codes to cover our entire bi-monthly application cap. Reserves and apps may change to a by-email format to accommodate for the invite system.
Waiting on this Decision- LJ is functional for now, but DW looks like a promising alternative, and other options may yet crop up. In the event of an overwhelmingly undecided position, we will hold off on making a long term decision for another 3-4 months, and see how things progress from there. Expect a re-polling in March or April.
Why are we even considering a move to DreamWidth?
Here is a comparative listing of features between LJ & DW. To avoid bias, I'll let you know now that it does has a pro-Dreamwidth slant. Importing the communities would lose icon comments on all archived LJ entries, as they appear on DW. The SP community cannot reimburse paid time for existing LJ accounts. DreamWidth's staff have shown an attentive interest in accommodating to the needs of LJ's RP community.
lj-releases &
news give a formal idea of what's going in in LJ development right now. No plans to re-integrate subject lines into the S1 style have been announced, but other bugs and issues are in the process of being addressed. More overhauls to the default style are in development, but we have no estimated timeframe for this. Other LJ users, many of them in the RP community and aware of our needs, are working on ways to keep communities and comment pages functional. LJ's Staff has been of mixed reception to a huge wave user feedback, following release 88, but they have not shown express interest/acknowledgement in catering to the needs of RP community functionality.
The full SP Modteam is resolved and on board to stick with the game, no matter where your votes want us to end up. We are committed to a solution that works for continuing SP into another successful year.
Please do not feel rushed to make a hasty decision now. We value your opinion, but understand that the present situation is frustrating, and that time, discussion and future options may make your choices clearer and easier. Take your time in thinking it over. The poll will be open for two weeks, and our situation may change within that time-frame.
New January Applicants! All of you, regardless of whether your applications have been processed through the queue yet, have a stake in our community's future too. You are free to vote in this poll, as well as give your opinions! As soon as your application is in the queue, you may use The same journal you applied with to vote.
