We are shinigami. We obey the Spirit King and keep the balance between souls in the Human World and Soul Society. We purify the corrupt souls that did not pass on and attempt to feast on human souls.
It is our duty.

Then ye assist thy world's God.
...I see thy past has been bedeviled as mine.

Bedeviled?
[There might be the tiiiiiiiiiiniest bit of amusement, there. MAYBE.]
Reply
Aye, bedeviled. I am an attractant for the wicked things within my world. Tis the price I paid for behaving with rashness.
[Her eyebrow ratchets up as they reach the refreshment table, where they're greeted by a woman in a bright green dress and stomacher. She happily points toward the specials, and sheila's intermediary reading skills allow her to pick up two turkey legs and two plastic goblets of wine without much hassle. She hands one to him.]
Shall we sit beneath the shade trees?

I have never thought of my past as bedeviled. It is not so unusual from many of those in my world.

Then they hath peace? I have rather lived a life without it.

There is peace in duty. We have our duty and though it is not a quiet one, there is peace to be found in it. Peace is personal. Everyone must find it in their own way.

Arthur hath spake of that before. The joy of serving the people. I alternated most shamefully betwixt willfulness and dutiful behavior. My parents made oft comment 'pon it, and I tried them sorely.
But ye speak as if ye do not know it. Peace doth not rain upon my head. I do believe I am not in this world to feel it.

I have my duty. It is my honor to be the head of the Kuchiki clan and taichou of the Sixth Division. I find my peace in other areas. Calligraphy, meditations, politics. Even the simple act of sitting in the garden amongst the sakura blossoms.

I would love to see thy garden.
[She's seen a glimpse of it upon the NV, but never in person.]
And I didst not know what Calligraphy was 'til Ella showed me an example. Tis a lovely art. I see that it might bring thee tranquility.
[Yes, it's noteworthy that she doesn't use the word 'peace' here.]

The gardens here are unlike those at home. My gardens at the estate are quite extensive. Those here, merely adequate.
[He's being a snob, but, honestly, his estate is known for their sakura trees.
English calligraphy is not as intricate as the kind I practice.

Ye shall see them again.
[She knows that, somehow.]
Ye practice...kanji then, is it called? Ye must forgive me, if I hath pronounced it ill.
[She has learned a couple of things from the NV, and from Lee.]
Reply
Yes. It is a soothing art, one I learned as a child.
[To settle someone's temper down.]
Reply
Wert thou of a foul one?
Reply
More of an explosive one. It taught me to settle my mind and even steadied my hands in battle.
