Generally, imprisonment would have sent Liquid into a screaming rage. This was not a general situation, however. His body trembled faintly with violent rage, the urge to reach out to the cultists and tear them apart limb from limb almost unbearable. Somehow, he couldn't move. That paralysis made it far worse. "What... the hell...?" he managed to speak out of sheer stubbornness. "Release me!"

The sheer effort it took to speak was unusual for him. Liquid couldn't remember the last time he'd felt as angry as this. Why had they been brought here? What was going on? He couldn't even turn his head to see who else was in this situation. If they had taken any of his extended family, they were going to pay. Of course Snake wouldn't be stupid enough to get caught; this was Iraq all over again, his failure, his mistake - how had they done this to him? Odd, how anger absorbed fear like a sponge absorbed water. Just as it always had, his rage shielded him, burying the fear beneath itself ( ... )

One of the hooded figures, impossibly gentle, lifted the bandages up over his tattoo to dabble the skin briefly with oil, staring sympathetically into and yet entirely past the blind rage in his eyes.

"You can be first released, if you wish. Your strength will fuel us, you will be our life."

Several others echoed this rhythmically in turn, an overlapping babble.

"You will be our life."

Liquid glowered at the strange words, watching the figure like a hawk. "What are you even doing?" he demanded. The odd sympathy, the gentleness, none of it fitted with the usual actions of captors. Liquid would have expected scorn and anger. It was unnerving. For that matter, the odd symbiosis between them, the words, none of it made any sense. It was as if they were speaking another language. 'our life'? What kind of whacked out nutjobs were these?

"Then release me, if that's what you plan to do!" he snapped. "Keeping me captive will serve nothing."

"We will unseal the vessel, and free you."

"What vessel?" he half-snarled, annoyed by their avoidance. If they meant to free him, they wouldn't have to wait. Did that mean that they were referring to something else when it came to 'releasing' him? "Why do you need to paralyse me to unseal it?!"

"You wouldn't come willingly, would you?" A sigh, and then a softly dismissive sniff "Not even if we'd explained it- the doubting fools have corrupted you. The part that was once the Core's Soul in you has been slumbering- but fear not..."

A smile, and she gestures to the far wall of the boathouse, where a branding iron is warming over a small old-fashioned coal stove. "We will awaken it."

Liquid tensed as much as the paralysis would allow him, following the gesture with his eyes. That was definitely not something he wanted to happen. He'd had enough of hot iron in his life. "Don't you dare! The Core's soul? What sort of nonsense is this?! I carry nothing of the Core within me!"
